Personal defense weapons if the government has them

The Department of Homeland Security is seeking to acquire 7,000 5.56x45mm NATO “personal defense weapons” (PDW) — also known as “assault weapons” when owned by civilians. The solicitation, originally posted on June 7, 2012, comes to light as the Obama administration is calling for a ban on semi-automatic rifles and high capacity magazines.

Citing a General Service Administration (GSA) request for proposal (RFP), Steve McGough of RadioViceOnline.com reports that DHS is asking for the 7,000 “select-fire” firearms because they are “suitable for personal defense use in close quarters.” The term select-fire means the weapon can be both semi-automatic and automatic. Civilians are prohibited from obtaining these kinds of weapons.

The RFP describes the firearm as “Personal Defense Weapon (PDW) – 5.56x45mm NATO, select-fire firearm suitable for personal defense use in close quarters and/or when maximum concealment is required.” Additionally, DHS is asking for 30 round magazines that “have a capacity to hold thirty (30) 5.56x45mm NATO rounds.”

Republican New York state Sen. Greg Ball also issued a press release this week bringing attention to the weapons purchase request.

Calls made to DHS seeking information regarding whether or not the RFP was accepted and fulfilled were not immediately returned on Saturday.

Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-Calif.) on Thursday introduced legislation that would enact a so-called “assault weapons” ban. The bill would ban more than 150 firearms and limit magazines to 10 rounds. There is no expiration date on Feinstein’s bill.

Can anyone give me a logical explanation why the DHS needs 7000 rifles? I can't figure it out.

Because they'll need them when they come to take ours.

Why would ANYONE need high-powered, large capacity assault weapons? They're only good for killing large numbers of people as quickly as possible, right?

    Oh. ... OH!

I assume these are to arm the newly formed "FEMA" army. They will shoot the millions of rounds of hollow point ammo that has been ordered.

I see what you did there :) and it was spot on. The kicker is that the PDW's they're looking at buying is an ACTUAL assault rifle with selective fire. But NNOOOO, semi-auto only get called "assault rifles." GRRR!

A "Chicago style politics" attempt at currying favor with a manufacturer/s?

Contract buys silence if not outright support?

    Remember S&W's rollover.

Another way to analyze the decision is the ballistic version of "follow the money" in an investigation. In this case - hypothetically imagine looking down the sights of these weapons. What's down range for them?

Sure have. And it explains the purchase request very well. Who else is going to supply the cartels with more guns?

So....since Obama nor DHS has any intention of securing the border, you are saying that DHS is going to be passing these select fire rifles out to those of us that live in Arizona, NM, Texas, and CA? OK....I guess that will work for now. Mighty nice of them to help out.

I thought all those illegals were going to be made US Citizens?

Why do we need so many rifles on the border, then?

Conspiracy theory ... Its not hard to Google it. Fox reported it over the weekend and there are a number of sites reporting it.

The government confiscated guns during Katrina. So coming after law abiding citizens guns already has a history. Make no mistake - the current administration is in bed and on-board with the gun grabbers. The verbiage is there.

Why are government agencies stockpiling weapons like the "assault rifle" (personal defensive rifle)??? To use against its citizens.

Law abiding citizens need to be thinking about what freedom means to them, and get active if any of our 2nd Amendment freedoms and Constitutional rights are to remain.

Click the links in The Blaze article folks...they go right to the actual RFP where one can see Immigration & Customs Enforcement is the agency requesting the rifles.
