I've been honking for carbine lately and I've seen some Plainsfield's going for under $500 here in Florida. I've done some googling and I can't seem to tell if they are made from USGI parts or not. If they are built anything like the Universals I've heard about I'll steer clear. If not; Ill have new carbine. :)

Anyone have any experience with them?

I have read that the first ones were made from new (cast) receivers and GI parts. Apparently, as time went on, they began to use their own barrels, parts, etc. The Plainfields and some older Iver Johnson's are considered to be ok guns. You are correct to steer clear of the Universal's. They made cost-cutting measures to change their guns to the point that USGI parts would not interchange.

I have a Plainfield that I use as a shooter. Shoots great with no hangup's after I got the O/A length & powder load twekted in. Shot 2100 rds thru it last year lots of fun! Would have no proplem with a plainfield for a shooter, might want to check out the CMP also.

One of my Carbines is a Plainfield.
Not a bad Carbine if you can find one in decent condition for under $500.

GI parts work on the Plainfield.
Even M2 parts.:)
