I picked up a Springfield MilSpec a few months ago and lately it's been giving me trouble. Specifically, empty cases are getting stovepiped or caught in the extractor port. This happens once every three rounds or so.

To this point I've tried 3 different brands of ammunition and about 5 different magazines, so I'm pretty sure either the spring or the extractor is messed up.. after reading the 1911 Clinic in the gunsmithing thread it's kind of reinforced what I've suspected.

It's still under warranty so I think I'm going to take it back to have the store's gunsmith take a look at it. Any other ideas or is this my safest bet?

I think i would send it back to Sa myself .. or course depending on stores gunsmith the smith loacly here scares me and i wouldnt let him touch any of my guns warrenty or not .

Sounds like the extractor to me

Yep...

It's the extractor. Springfield had a run of bad ones over the last several months. Soft, incorrectly heat-treated...etc. Evidently, you got one of
the bad ones. The other bad news is that they may not have identified the
bad lot of parts, and are still using them and replacing them under warranty
as they come back, instead of having a general recall and replacing them
I guess they feel like nobody has enough sense to bend or straighten an extractor to get the right tension on it.

If you send it back...and they haven't isolated the bad lot, you may wind up
with "another one just like the other one." (Kudos to anybody who can
name the song that THAT quote came from) Want to save yourself some headaces? Order an Ed Brown Hardcore extractor from Brownells.

Play with the tension first...It may drop in and work with no other attention. If not, follow the instructions on the fitting/tuning/tweaking
in the Clinic Thread...and save the adjust ment on the front pad for last.
Remove just a tiny bit, and retry...repeat until it works. Don't take the
front pad lower than .125 inch in any event.

Luck!

Tuner

Tuner, I believe that's Tom Petty's "Spike (the Boy with the Dog Collar On)," from the album "Southern Accent."

I bet you got a motorbike. Maybe if I'm nice you'll give me a ride on it.

Southern Accent

Lobotomy Boy...Nope. It's: "Don't Bogart that Joint" Can't recall the
artiste at the moment...It's been about 35 years:D I'm thinkin'
Captain Hook and the Medicine Show. Could be dead wrong.

It's part of the soundtrack from Easy Rider...Peter Fonda...Jack Nicholson...
Dennis Hopper.

Cheers!

If it's new

If that SA is new and you have been using 230gr Ball Ammo. And this problem is happening I would send the gun back to SA.

Tuner,

I think that was Little Feat. The line was "So roll another one, just like the other one..." Tom Petty's song went, "Here comes another one, just like the other ones, another bad ass, another misfit, another Jimmy Dean. I bet he's got a motorcycle. Maybe if we're nice he'll give us a ride on it." The speaker then proceeds to whoop the living tar out of the young man in question.
