Question for Virginia members

    Question-Is Mace or pepper spray legal to carry in your state without permits also what is the position regarding carrying it on a college campus. I have my daughter going to school up there and like all fathers I am concerned for her safety. Thanks for any info.

    I believe it is quite legal in Virginia. However, a quick call to the State Police or Attorney General's office would clear it up for you.

    I just graduated from Old Dominion University, here in Norfolk. The bookstores sell pepper spray, and I've never read or heard anything about it being prohibited. The individual school may have a policy, you could try the campus police number. Good luck to her!

    I remember living in the dorms and university village at Old Dominion University that one of the prohibited items along with guns was "Dangerous or caustic chemicals." listed under the weapons section of the student handbook. I always assumed that meant mace/pepper spray. Not that it stopped me from having a few in my room, now that im an alumn i can also say i concealed carry almost every day to class.

    pepper spray and mace is fine. Taser, batons, knives, guns, etc. are not. But...what they don't know can't hurt them (or you/her)

    As a side note, lawful concealed carry on Old Dominion University campus is "against school policy," not illegal. Firearms in vehicles on campus is ok, according to school policy.

    Pepper spray is a food product, I've put it on burritos before. :D

    It's not illegal, but they'll kick you out of school for carrying on campus.

    From what I've gathered over the past few years while attending a community college, it's up to the particular school to decide whether it's against school policy to carry something in your pocket.

    Being in a more relaxed community, I can get away with having my AR-15 in my car, pepper spray in my pocket, as well as a large hunting knife attached to my side. Try that out in Blacksburg and you'll end up in handcuffs.

    Basically, call your daughter's school or look through the handbook. I would imagine that mace (especially since we are dealing with a female) would be legit.
