Assuming equal condition and equal pricing which one? I know the 4506 is a newer rendition of the 645.

In equal price and condition id go 3rd gen just because its newer......also If i remember correctly the 3rd gen has the wrap around grips and the 645 had 2 piece... might have more options on 3rd gen.

Whichever fits your hand better (or looks or feels better, or any number of intangibles). The 645's grip backstrap is part of the frame and little can be done to change its profile, while the 4506's grips can be swapped for flat or arched backstraps or with those of aftermarket makers like Hogue.

schmeky... That 4506 is simply beautiful!! You know I have neither, however, this past week had the opportunity to shoot a friends 5906 (9mm), VERY, VERY IMPRESSED!... So much so, I ordered one NIB this past week... it'll be waiting for me Tuesday.
My first guns owned (many years ago) were S&W 'wheelies' (.357ss 4", 6", Chiefs .38)... great guns, work-horses, flawless, quality shoots!
This 5906 is just like the CZs... all-metal, heavy classic-gun looks, and great shooter's!!
I'd snag the 'newer generation' 4506... will complement your 40B perfectly!!
    Happy 'Hunting!'

    D_mn you GZOH,

You tryin' to get me back for that 40B, ain't you? Found a 4506 today but someone already made a committment. You just helped me decide between the 645 and 4506.

    They are both great guns.

A friend of mine had a 645 many years ago, but lost it in a burglary. :( Although I never got to try it out, he seemed to absolutely love it.

    As a fan of the Third-Gen S&W guns - I've had a 915 and currently own a 5906 - the 4506 or 4566 are on my short list if I ever decide I need a .45, as the 4006 and 1006 will be among my choices should I ever decide I want a .40 S&W or a 10mm.
