S&W M&P Shield POI

I thought I was nuts [and maybe I am] or the world's poorest marksman [and maybe I am]. Just to check my sanity and marksmanship, I asked one of the pros at the shop to shoot my M&P Shield. He came up with the same result - it shot extremely high and very wide to the left. The shop adjusted the front sight, and it moved POI about halfway from where it had been to where it should be. After the second front sight adjustment, it shot dead on [at seven yards - who knows what it will do when I lengthen the range].

The front sight now looks visibly off center to the left.

What would cause this anomaly? What, if anything, can be done about it?

I don't know what caused yours to shoot high and left, but mine shoots about 3 1/2 to 4 inches low at 7 yds. I called S&W on Thursday and talked to a very nice guy there. He didn't have the answer to my question either but said to run about 200 rounds through it to be sure it is well broken in and if I still have a problem, to call back and they would email me a label to send it back to the factory to be checked out. The tech also suggested I shoot it off a rest be verify the problem.
I would suggest you call S&W on Monday and ask them what caused your problem. I suspect they will have you send it back to be checked. My FIL has dealt with the performance center several times and always had good results.

I know a guy who had a model 39 years ago with the same problem. He had to adjust the sights way off to get it to hit POA. He finally sold the gun to my cousin, who is left handed, knowing what it was doing. My cousin shoots it very well. He looks at it from the other side and it works for him. Go figure!

My Shield's front sight is set a little to the left of center. It was that way out of the box. I wondered if I might have a problem on my hands. But when I got it to the range it puts bullets where ever I put that front sight. No accuracy issues out to 20 yards, which is about as far as I can get from the berm at my range. Groups at 6 inches or less at 7 yards. Its a great carry gun. A nice hot round in a small package. Mine's a .40.

Did you happen to try a different brand of ammo? Maybe your pistol just really does not like that particular load? Mine shoots dead-on with the three loads I have tried at 7 yards.

I recently got a Shield and am very happy with it. It, too, shot a couple inches low left, when I first shot it. After I put another 150 rounds through in two more sessions and replaced the sear with an Apex sear, it shot dead on. Very accurate. I can put 5 rounds in about 1.5-2 inches from 7 yards.

You might also try a slightly different trigger finger position.

Took my new Shield back out to the range today to run a few more rounds through it. I have around 175 through it now. It still shoots about 3 inches low at 7 yds. If I hold it very tightly it will shoot a little higher. I must say that I have had zero, none, nada malfunctoins what so ever. I shot 4 different brands of ammo through it and all shot to the same point. Not POA however. I like the gun but something is going to have to give with this low shooting. My FIL has a PPS that does much better and will shoot a good group with the same ammo at the same range. I would think that with 175 rounds through it everything would be worn in well and it should settle down by now. I'm not going to give up on it but I am used to guns shooting a lot tighter.

My Shield 9mm now has about 400 rounds through it. When new, I shot it at 30' aiming dead center on at a 1" square on a white sheet of paper. I found my gun shot about 3/4" high and perfectly in line with a two hand hold and 124 gr handloads. I now use a 6 o'clock hold and it is pretty much dead on with that weight bullet and target. My shooting was confirmed by one of my fellow RSO's who got exactly the same results with my gun. Since the initial break in I have loaded a couple of magazines with range pickups of various weights and manufactures. All rounds were pretty much the same POA as my handloads. I will be switching to Meprolight TruDot night sights as they become available just because I have them on my Kahr PM9 and they are very bright in the dark of night. I hope they give me the same sight picture and shot placement as I have now.
