Savage 110 Flyers

I'm having a accuracy problem with my newly acquired used Savage 25-06. Every 3rd round or so is a flyer. The first couple of shots will be MOA or less and the next round will be off about 2-3 inches @ 100yrds. I thought it may be the optics so I changed everything from the mounts to the scope and the problem persists. It's the same with factory loads and handloads. Any ideas what may cause this?

Copper fouling? A good cleaner like Barnes CR-10, will remove the copper fast. Savages have a rather rough bore, and need frequent cleaning. My 10FP is a great shooter, but after 50 or so rounds, my groups open up.

Cleaned it with foaming bore cleaner but that didn't help. I'll try some sweets 762 tomorrow. Hope it helps.

Make sure its a copper solvent, Hopps Benchrest 9 works good, but needs to set overnight to cut the fouling.

does the 110 have a heavy barrel? otherwise could a .25-06 heat the barrel enouh with 2 shots to throw it off just a little (2-3" at 100yards doesnt take much)?

No, it's a standard tapered barrel. I guess it could be overheating.

Insure that the barrel is free floating using a dollar bill after you have fired it. I had one that would free float cold but not hot. It would change poi. Also chect the screws on the action make sure they are tight not lose.

Also one other thing no one has mentioned, the barrel may be shot out. I have a Rem 700 VS in .25-06 that I have owned for 30 years. It did exactly what this rifle is doing. I might have 3 or 4 shots that were fine but then there was a flier.

The rifle now has a Krieger match barrel on it.

This rifle has an accutrigger, so I don't think it's that old. How long has Savage had the accutrigger in production? I can't imagine anyone could shoot the barrel out that fast. I've put hundreds of rounds through a rifle barrel and never shot one out before.

I checked the barrel and it is free floated at room temp. Also checked the action screws and they are tight. I cleaned it several times today with foaming bore cleaner and sweets 762 and still getting some faint blue tint on the patches. I now have foaming cleaner soaking in the barrel overnight. Hopefully I'll get to shoot tomorrow or Monday. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Oh yeah....If using a copper solvent, do not use a brass bore brush. Get some nylon brushes, or you will get blue patches after every time you brush it

But you might already know that....

I've left rem oil in a barrel overnight that i thought was clean and ran a patch in it the next day and couldnt believe what i got out. Lots of blue.

It's just getting hot....let er' cool between shots.
Try letting the barrel cool to the same temp. as the barrel was after the first shot, then see if your wondering, if so, it's not the heat...but I bet you your just getting too hot!

Glad to hear it most likely isn't shot out. Now, what are you shooting? The reason I asked this was I learned from my rifle that it didn't like certain primers. When I tried the Win LR primers groups got better. There's an awful lot of things it can be. More then likely I'm going to be on bullets and primers.

I've tried Federal and Rem factory stuff. my handloads are Rem brass Sierra 117 gr pro hunter imr4350 powder and cci LR primers.

I just got more blue copper fowling our of the barrel after the all night soak. There seams to be an endless supply. It must have been fouled pretty badly. More scrubbing today with sweet 7.62.

I'm amazed at the copper you're getting out of the barrel. You may want to pick up some JB Paste and scrub the bore. You're using good components although I didn't have a lot of luck with CCI primers in my .25-06.
