Gentlemen,

I have a 250-3000 Savage Model 99 which was given to me by my father back in 1964. It is stamped Savage Model 99 on the upper left forward side of the receiver. Below the Model 99 stamp and right above where the forearm fits into the receiver is stamped the letter "R". The Serial # is 733xxx. It appears that the "lever boss code" is 13F inside the oval.

Is this a Model 99R? Does anyone have any idea what year this rifle may have been manufactured? Does anyone have any idea what it might be worth? It has Stith Mounts which I believe means that it did not have to be drilled and tapped for scope mounting. I have a Weaver 2 3/4 x 5 power scope that came with it, it's just not mounted on it right now. The barrel length is 24" & the rifling is 1 in 14".

The rifle shoots very well and is pretty darn accurate, especially the 87 grain bullets.

Any information would be appreciated.

If you go to this site http://www.savage99.com/ you can look up the characteristics of your rifle. Sounds like you have an R model; is the buttplate steel? As far as date of manufacture maybe someone here can help. That site's data only goes through serial number 556000 which was made in 1950. I'm guessing yours would be a lot closer to 1964 than it is to 1950. Another good site:

Rick99 and the guys there may be able to get you an exact date and help with other questions. Lots of fun just reading over there. BTW don't give those Stith mounts away, 99er's pay good money for those. ;)

mmm the 250-3000 , the most valued of the 99's. just keep it nice, don't sell.
does it have the safety on the actual lever of rifle, or the tang?

Don't worry, I would never sell it. I do still hunt with it but it gets plenty of "TLC" and is always cleaned after being fired. The safety is on the lever.
