Someone wrote this article into my schools paper http://media.www.thebrownandwhite.c...inion/Column.Right.To.Bear.Harm-3981528.shtml . The article got me kind of annoyed in how little she had seemed to research about responsible and licensed gun carriers. Also my University is in a bad part of town and recently had 10 people robbed at gun point with a gun pointed to their head, so yea that disproved what good it would be to carry around.

She seems completely one sided and ignorant of all facts concerning the responsible carriers out there, I dont live in Texas but for one think it's a pretty good idea, just the mere fact that anyone on any college campus could be armed should at least have the would be shooters taken aback for a second, just my .02 but Im for it

O course that being said we ARE on a pro gun site Lol so I'd be suprised if many others disagreed lol

It's a university paper. Like it or not colleges and universities are going to be fairly heavily liberal. Not everyone there - heck I bent the rules a bit and kept a gun in my glovebox when I was in college - but a large number of them. You aren't going to change her mind.

Now, as to constructive actions: does the school paper take student submissions or does it have set writers? If it takes submissions, write a rebuttal piece. Do not be disrespectful, but rather present your opposing viewpoint in a clear, logical, and civil manner. After that the only thing you can do is let the readers decide for themselves.

Not having an account, I could not make this reply:

"As a student (as anything, really), I would never feel comfortable knowing someone may be hiding a weapon."

As a professor, I can assure you that, in that case, you should never be comfortable because someone may be hiding a weapon -- and probably is.

Disarming the law abiding does not disarm the law breaking.

Posted a comment, but it hasn't gone live...been approved...whatever...

Since I typed it, here it is...
Funny how you exercise your first amendment while bashing the second. What would you do If we did this same thing for anyone who wanted to exercise their first amendment? We could allow the government to require you to take a course to assure you are writing how they think you should. Then you had to prove that you would write how they approve you to write. Then you finally get your license to write! Whoops!! You write something that is against their polices for you to write. WHAM, you're in jail...and heck, I, as the minority, agree with them. Your wording was disturbing for me to read as a hardcore patriot, and you have disturbed me. Now you should be arrested for disturbing the peace, or disorderly conduct...

TJ says ...

"Error of opinion may be tolerated when reason is left free to combat it," sayeth Thomas Jefferson, so why not write your own article for the paper? Breathe deeply, gather information and opinion here at THR and elsewhere to support your point of view, and respond with a thoughtful argument supported by facts. That's what the First Amendment is all about.

Exactly! I think the proper response is to write a column yourself demonstrating the need to respect the 2A, both for reasons of legality and common sense. After all, the facts are on our side.

The only problem I can forsee is a rise in "crimes of passion."

Sorry but you can't cure stupid, and its taught at most universities, best I can see is to go to the paper and point out what a hack job it was, and offer to write the counter point, as they don't want to be "biased".....

That is why (no offense to anyone) I chose to not pursue a liberal arts degree.

Until a person has lived in a country (not the U.S.) where the prevalence of (illegal) guns is real as I do, you won't understand how it feels to live in constant fear, to never know who's going to use it against you or for self-defense.

She has forgotten that we do have illegal guns here, and people such as so called tough guys in gangs do make people live in constant fear of getting shot.

For the most part I don't give much of any credit to my school paper.
Heck, even inspire magazine (the al-qaeda publication) that I had to read for class (I'm an homeland security major) had better writing.

My University advertised an empty holster protest in it. I was actually shocked by the number of students that actually showed up that day with empty holsters. One of the on campus clubs even handed out bright orange inflatable guns to put in the holsters.

Teacher kicked us out of class tho. Said we were disrupting the class...

She replied in the comments with something along the lines of "carrying a gun and living in constant fear".

Really? If I'm the one with a gun, what do I have to fear?

This article was severely hampered by the author's limited employment of fallacious reasoning. Basically it's one long strawman argument with a few half-hearted sweeping generalizations (correlation does not equal causation!) conclusions thrown in. I thought she was going for an appeal to authority with the CDC statistic but she failed to close the idea. She should at least have gotten in some circular logic and non sequiturs.

is an anti trap. You can make a good case that the Holocaust survivor professor who was killed as he grappled with the gunman might have changed the outcome, had he had a gun.

Ah, I see. The dozens of Texan lawmakers who support the law have devised a foolproof plan. College students are some of the most responsible folks.

According to a study, 599,000 students ages 18 to 24 are unintentionally injured under the influence of alcohol. The CDC reports that the number of alcohol-induced deaths a year amounts to 23,199. That's just alcohol, comparatively harmless next to ammunition.

I hate this statistic. I resent it because I was a responsible college student. Also, it condones bad behavior. "We can't allow students to carry guns, they're all stupid drunkards!" Well, maybe the problem isn't guns, it's rampant drunk students. In all honesty though, the students that drink enough that they are smashed while ON CAMPUS, during the week, are usually the ones who don't get any work done and fail out of school. There aren't too many of those.

"As a student (as anything, really), I would never feel comfortable knowing someone may be hiding a weapon."

funny how she IS comfortable to not have any idea who might be hiding a weapon. these people make no sense

All she referenced were lies, and statistics, which are the same in my opinion. As you can find statistics that can be made to say whatever you want.

"In 1994, in just 100 days, more people were killed with machetes and clubs in Rwanda, than have died from atomic weapons in all of history!"
