Should this gun have any play at all between frame and slide? Does the fact that it's not rock-solid tight mean there's something wrong with it?

Those who own or have experience with this gun, please contribute. I would greatly appreciate it.

All the SIG P-Series guns seem to have some degree of slide-to-frame play. It is not an issue, as it does not affect accuracy one bit. The barrel lockup to the slide is much more critical. The barrel and sights are mated to the slide, which is where the holy matrimony comes from. If your hands are shaking enough that the slide to frame fit (or wobbling sight picture) comes into play with your shooting, you likely aren't hitting anywhere near the target to begin with.

Enjoy that SIG. It's one of the flagships from the good ole' days of SIG Sauer.
