So I got a slot to head to the Army's Small Arms Master Gunner School in Arkansas. Nobody in my unit has been to this school, and I'm wondering if anyone here on THR has been and can tell me what to expect.

From what I see on the course description it is learning to run ranges and instruct operation and marksmanship for M16 thru M2, grenade, and claymore. Anything else I should know or do to prepare?

Supposedly a high round count on all the weapons systems, so I'm pretty stoked to be going.

    Thanks in advance.

The Small Arms Master Gunner course is not really that hard. You will have to qualify on the M16 Rifle, M9 Pistol, M249 SAW, M240B, M2HB, MK19, and also the M203. You will not be working with Hand Grenades or Claymores at this course.
You will also go over class room instruction on how to brake all the weapons systems down, and how to go about instruction people on proper Cleaning, Use, and how to qualify on their personal weapon, and range operations.
The trainers that teach the course also teach SDM School, as well as the Sniper School. So you will get a lot of good information well you are there.

Our company is sending someone, and I was a bit upset I didn't get a shot at it. It was funny, they were so insistent on having an NCO go, they had to force one to go, when I was just about breaking my arm trying to sign up.

I just finished the Fort Bliss Small Arms Master Gunner Course today, and all I can say is WOW! I learned soooo much. I wish the Army treated small arms like they do big bullets, and made this an Army recognized course with an ASI. I recommend this course to EVERY NCO/OFFICER! It wasn't a "souped up armorers course", nor was it a "Sniper Course". It taught SDZ's, 6-month range plans, weapons, optics, lasers, training aids, Ultimate Training Munitions (ouch!), Shoulder Launched Munitions, EST Operator/Certification, and STRAC. PEO Soldier also came and talked fielding for each of our units, and what is being developed and adapted by the Army. The Instructors were very knowledgeable, and helpful. I left there with knowledge, and enough classes, offsets, and information to melt a pogue's brain!!! Kudos to Fort Bliss for running this excellent course!
