I was looking on Smith and Wesson website today for the first time and I noticed they don't have the 4506! Is it out of production? I can't imagine why they would cancel such a fine firearm with a great track record.

IT's been out of production for several years now, it is an awesome 45 though.

1999 was the last year of production for this venerable pistol. I began looking for one in 2003 and it took me almost a year to find a like-new piece. I paid $450. (I also have a 1006, 4006 and 5906; I like the 3rd gen guns.)

The 4506 is one of the most robust .45 ACP pistols ever produced. It can handle .45 super with only a new recoil spring (or not, on a limited basis). The same can be said for the other 3rd gen stainless guns. I run full power loads exclusively in my 1006 (180 grain loads ranging from 1300-1400 FPS).

If you are lloking for a stout, current production steel DA .45 auto, the Sig P220 ST, CZ-97 or EAA Witness are probably your best bet.

I looked for almost two years before I found one. Here in Mass, the 4506 is not on the Approved Firearms Roster so the only way I could get one was by buying it from a resident of Massachusetts that owned it before 1998.

It cost me $575, and it was worth every penny.
