So who's got compensators on their pistols?

Possibly chalk this question up to insomnia but I had an idea while I was laying down at 3:55 am, staring at my ceiling fan going round and round and round and rou.. you get the point


Anyway I've got this thing where I just like my guns to look different than others. Just something small. I've been thinking about hard chrome, engraving, but I saw a used something or other (can't remember right now) with a compensator for sale and got me wondering.

Any of y'all have one on any of yours? I'm not too sure if I'll even do it or not or which one I'll try it on first just fishing for ideas. I have no experience or don't know what I'm talking about here just looking for ideas. Kind of thinking on an auto but again I'm not sure. Not the type that just is the barrel sized but the type that extends down the frame.

None of my guns have them for three reasons:

1- The recoil to loudness tradeoff is not worth it for me.

2- Comps/ports are a great way to give yourself some really cool burns if you shoot from retention position or anything like it.

3- JMB didn't put it on the 1911

My Taurus .357 range use revolver has them.

My wife's retired Taurus .38 Spec has them too, didn't care much for them.

I have a comp KKM barrel in my G21, a SA V10 ultra compact, Series 70 1911 DA with comp and customized SA 1911 with comp Clark barrel. I enjoy shooting them but am glad I have long arms. The V10 in particular has a nasty blast but is otherwise comfortable at arms length.

Comps on my 38 super para 1911, and 9x23 caspian. But those are Open class competition guns, so that's expected.
Also had a Glock 23 fitted with a comp, but I didnt much like the gun, so got rid of it, but kept the barrel/comp assembly in case i ever decided i wanted another one. I am thinking of fitting it's replacement, the glock 17, with one, but since it is the C version, with ports in the barrel, I'm really not in a hurry to do it.

Ive never really noticed a huge difference in guns that ive shot in both compensated and uncompensated models.That said,my famous Hi-Point 9mm is the only compensated handgun i own and all i can say about it is that it works at least as far as being able to see the gases being diverted upward as long as the sun is going down and its getting dark.Looks cool if nothing else! I had one once. It was a Glock 21c & I didn't like it. 1st, it spit degris like you wouldn't believe & the 45 acp just doesn't generate enough pressure to really take advantage of it. I've also shot a comp'd 38 super...now that was nice

My Mark IV has had a Centaur Systems Quadra-comp and barrel on it since the mid 80s, when I wanted to take up IPSC and bowling pin competition. Other custom work was done on it and it remains in it's "race" configuration to this day. Still shoots better than any other weapon I own, also. I've posted pics before.

Everyone who says a comp isn't effective or it doesn't do much,

Go try out an "open" IPSC race gun!

I know they're not practical for CCW or duty, but you've just got to admit the effect is dramatic. The pistol doesn't move - if it's got a dot, it doesn't move. It's just "right there" for the next shot.

That said, I don't even have one.

I just like my guns to look different than others.

My personal CCWs ( well most any of mine FTM) do look different than everybody elses...mine look stock.
Kinda a rariety these days, do hear on occasion "so that's what it looks like without doodads and fins..."

People seem to be confusing porting with compensators. They are very different.

Porting is just drilling holes in the barrel. You lose some velocity, and gain some noise and blast, in return for a bit of a reduction in muzzle flip.

A compensator is an actual device attached to the muzzle. Compensators can have a DRAMATIC effect on muzzle jump and felt recoil, and don't cost you any velocity. But they are loud as hell.
