Source of statement on WWI rifles - mauser/springfield/enfield

    Most learned ones,

    OK, this is something that I can't recall the source of. It goes something like this:

    "In WWI, the Germans went to war with a hunting rifle (Mauser), the Americans went to war with a target rifle (Springfield), and the English went to war with a battle rifle (Enfield)."

    I'm pretty sure that I read it myself. At first I thought that it was in McBride's book, but I could not find it. Now I'm not sure. I've asked a few folks over the last couple of years, but so far no solid source has been found.

    The challenge is on! Who said this, and where is the original source?
