SR1911 story....

A couple of weeks ago I was lucky enough to get an sr1911. I put about 100 rounds through it and it was great. I'm also a uspsa shooter and decided to test it out in a match over the weekend.

So during the the match all was well, until the final stage. The buzzer sounded and my first round went off and then nothing. I tapped the mag, racked the slide and bang, but again nothing after the gun fired. The timer was running so I was not really paying attention to the type of malfunction I was having so I dropped the mag put a new one in and it took off running with no problem and I finished the stage.

So I got to wondering was it the mag or the gun? The malfunction happened with the ruger factory mag that came with the gun. The next day I went to the local indoor range and put 50 rounds thru the gun with Kimber pro mags and no malfunctions. Then I put the problem ruger factory mag in and I did notice it was pretty hard to load the mag with ammo. I racked a round in and it went bang but it did not extract the shell. The next round in the mag was pushing against it and it ripped the rim off of the spent case.

I took the mag out and went back to the Kimber mags and had another trouble free 50 rounds.

Of course this was a magazine malfunction and not the gun but has anyone heard of a malfunction like this? I attached an image of the shell casing.

this was a magazine malfunction and not the gun

last I checked, the magazine was an integral part of any auto-loader.

So IMHO if the factory mag failed, the factory gun failed.... and Ruger (or any oter manufacturer for that matter) shouldn't be absolved from their responsibility to put out a product that actually works.

That said.... what ammo are you using? Some ammo makers put out .45 acp in very thin brass cases.

A defective mag is not that uncommom. I would contact Ruger and I'm sure they will send you a replacement one. This is no big deal to me.

Quit fooling with Kimber crap and just buy Wilson or Chip McCormick mags. End of story. Ruger mag is probably warped.

In your picture, I don't see a spent primer. Is it the lighting?

I second the motion for Wilson magazines. Only ones I use in my 1911.

Kimber makes good magazines, I've had more problems with the Wilson mags I've bought! The two 1911 9mm mags I've bought have been crap!

I bought a half dozen generic 1911 mags at the last gun show for five bucks each. I ran 200 rounds of 230 grain WWB FMJ through them with no problems.

It has to be jammed up pretty good to rip the rim like that.

I only worry if a 1911 won't run with Wilson, Tripp, Tac Pro or CMC mags. If a 1911 runs with any mag I consider it a nice bonus.

Crap happens. Who knows? Maybe the mag got dropped at the factory and the feed lips were damaged.

My hypothesis is the mag in question has the mag catch cutout too low, so the mag sits too high in the gun causing the next round to block the extraction of the one in the chamber.

If this is the case it'll "work" if you load one round. You should be able to see the problem manually cycling dummy rounds.

You can probably salvage the magazine by moving the top surface of the mag catch cutout higher, so the mag sits lower in the frame when locked in. Probably not worth the effort, but I always like to try such a thing as a test of my TEOTWAWKI gunsmithing skills

Probably 90% of all autoloader failures are at their root magazine failures, and the magazine is the most failure prone part in the gun.

Willbooz61: I too had a similar problem with my new SR1911. When I first got this pistol I noticed that the slide would not release with either Ruger magazine in place when the the slide was locked back no matter how hard I pressed. When I tried other mags (including Colt ones), I had no problem releasing the slide with normal pressure on the slide release. Now to the worst part; upon firing my new SR1911 for the first time using the Ruger mags and after the 4th or 5 th shot, my pistol locked up with the slide closed and an empty case in the chamber. I could not move the slide back not matter how hard I tried. Off to Ruger it goes, and it was returned with a new slide and a mangled case worse than yours. The pistol works fine now, but the slide still won't release with the Ruger mags. These mags have been replaced twice by Ruger at this point, since I have many non-Ruger mags, I'm not going to sweat the small s--t. Overall, I love this pistol (and my Colt mags)!

That is incredible. What kind of force would it take to peel the rim like that if the rim is not defective. I cannot see just riding up in a mag peeling a rim like that, even with a sharp edge in the mag. I would love to see the magazine.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing with how ripped up that rim is. How does the extractor look?

I have a theory. With the factory Ruger magazine, the fired case is crashing into the feedlips of the magazine during extraction. The case mouth is still part way in the chamber when the case head collides with the feedlips so the case rim is ripped off by the extractor and the fired case isn't ejected. The slide continues rearwards as it should, then moves forward, strips a new cartridge from the magazine which then pushes the spent case back into the chamber causing the pistol to jam with the slide out of battery. If the feed lips are bent inwards or out of spec, it could explain why it's hard to load the magazine. Just a theory based on the information supplied.
