Talk to me about Nashville...

Just thought I'd chime in ...

It looks like most of your questions have been answered. Plenty of places to buy your firearms, no waiting periods, etc.. Job market's not too bad, but I really can't speak from experience since I've worked for the same company for 15 years (which is weird since I'm an IT guy, I know ...)

Traffic's not really that bad compared to Atlanta, which is probably the closest place that has truly awful traffic.

The best sushi (or for that matter, Japanese of any sort) IMHO is at a place called Tanuki in Hickory Hollow (southeast side of the county). They make the best bowl of oyako-don I've had since I left Japan back in '86, and their yakisoba is killer. To be fair, it also has the advantage of being relatively near my home. There's a pretty decent Indian place downtown as well.

The housing situation is very flexible. Depending on your income and commute requirements you have lots of options.

If you do move out here we can all go shoot to welcome you. Which would be fun for me since I only recently discovered THR myself and haven't met any of the Nashville contingent off-line.

9%? Holy crap!

There's 1,352 guitar pickers in Nashville, and they can pick more notes than the number of ants on a Tennessee anthill.....

Standard Nashville Joke #3: How do you get a songwriter off your doorstep? Pay for the pizza.

Standard Nashville Joke #12: You're so Nashville if ... you know all 3 names for the street you're driving on.

You know how to make a million bucks playing Bluegrass?

Start with two million.

How's the IT (information technology, not infinite tacticality) field out there?

In all honesty I can't really tell you. I'm kind of in a weird position. I went to work for my employer when I was 19 and going to school, we were bought out by big-bad-parentco 5 years later and I went from doing local tech work as a portion of my "real" job to being the IT guy here ("Here" being 10 facilities scattered around TN and KY). As I said, I've worked here for 15 years (as of 9/13) and I haven't really been looking. My interviewing / networking (with people, that is) skills aren't that great so I'm not the best person to ask. That's why I didn't try to answer the original question about IT job prospects.

I will say this - pay may seem lower compared to some parts of the country, but the cost of living is pretty decent. I was working with my counterpart in Atlanta recently. She just transferred down from Albuquerque. She was looking at houses that cost $2-$300K and were maybe on par with my little $110K place. Of course, I don't live in "Nashville" proper.

And yeah, that sales tax is a bit rough when it comes time to make the bigger purchases, but I'd still rather pay 8.75% on my purchases than have an income tax. :barf:

Well, even 10% pales in comparison to the 14% income tax plus 7.75% sales tax put together here. Besides, I buy most of my high dollar items on the net anyway.

I want to sincerely thank everyone here for their help and input. I've done the math and at this point it looks as if waiting until April or so to move will make a BIG difference. I'm not too risk-adverse, but doing it impulsively could leave me dangling. By April I can save enough to not really have a care in the world when I move, and if I find a job quick, put a nice chunk down on a house immediately.

I'm still gonna come visit first and check things out...so I'll definitely PM you guys when I do so we can have a range trip and I can buy you those beers :D

TFL/THR memebers continue to amaze me. I'm convinced you won't find better company *anywhere* on the web. I can't say it enough - you guys epitomize the best in American values and living.

:)

Just for the record...I've lived in East Nashville 53 years and I've never shot anyone...yet. Yes, I've come close twice. I still say"come on down, you'll love it".

actually it is 7 percent with local governments adding on anywhere from 0 to 2.75 percent (I think most go to 2.25). But who wants to get technical about it. :)

Heck, you people have it easy. In my city, the sales tax totals 8.375% *(0)* (thats food, ammo, lumber, you name it). If you eat in a restaurant or stay in a Motel or Hotel, tack on an extra 10% HMR tax. Any wonder why we call Fayetteville the People's Republik of Fayettenam?

We also have a state income tax, but it is quite mild.

(0) The combined State, County, and City sales taxes. State and county only account for about 4.5-5%percent of the total tax.

I USED to live in Murfreesboro...about 13 years ago, and wish I could move back. Especially now that I've starting acquiring guns, and want to get a CCW permit. Plus, being able to buy REAL fireworks (year round too!) are kinda nice too. :D

At least one good free public range exists.
Quite a few gun stores, though only one is good and inexpensive.

am glad to have moved here from Minnesota. The culture here is much more suitable for the like sof us.

Would you care to expound on the gun store thing?

Also, from the little bit I know about you, I believe you are an asset to the Nashville community. Glad you are staying.

Oleg, please... which one is good and inexpensive? Inquiring minds would love to have your opinion, believe me. Oh, and Gun City... yeah, they're high, really high... but Jack is a good dude to just sit and yak with. The gal that owns the place, though, must think they're diamonds instead of guns...

After reading all these posts, I have but one more thing to say:

There better be a lot more people at the next TN THR shoot! We could easily have a group of 20 or more! :)

My favorite gun store (unfortunately, it is on the north side far from me) is Guns and Leather.
Hmm. I've never heard of that one. (does a quick search). Ye Gods. It's in Springfield. That's more than just a touch out of the way. It's on the exact opposite side of the county from me. That's gotta be 50 miles from my house. *sigh*

Hmm. It's only 35 miles and a almost a straight shot if I wait till I'm working at my other office on the west side of town. Cool.

If you are in IT and looking to move to the south....try Huntsville, AL......we are only about an hour and a half south of Nashville and this is one of the most technologically advanced towns in the country.
The cost of living here is lower than in Nashville and is IMHO a great place to live.....i am IT myself so i could point you twoards the better places to work.

Guns and Leather? Hmm; you're the first one I've heard recommend them that highly, except for the holster wear there.

I go to that store a lot. It's where I got my G21 and G34. Good prices, good people.

Rumor has it that in October, they will be opening an INDOOR range, and a new, larger store. Understanding that this is a rumor, but supposedly they will also have some kind of rifle setup, too. Don't know the veracity of this, and I haven't had a chance to ask.

Dennis and David will take good care of you.

BTW, It's in Greenbrier, rather than Springfield.

I only cruised through on my way to other places. Never drift far from the highway exits. Not sure whether it's safe or not with all those cops around. Mostly they always seem too busy to bother with me though.

hmmm goign to have to look this place up. im in springfield usualy once or twice a month for work. usualy stop at ASP on my way back for a quick once over ;). will think about a different way home/back to the office if its worth it :D
