****The best powder for a .270 winchester****

I only load 130 gr bullets. 4831 is the best powder for me. I think any powder with a burn speed about the same would do. However I had no luck working up a load with any faster burning powders.

Actually I'm shooting the 140 Grain Sierra over 44 Grains of IMR 4064.
Really accurate load in a couple of different .270's hereabouts.
Yep! I'll sacrifice 100 to 200 fps when my first three shots form a Ruger #1 in .270 TOUCH at 100 yards using the above load!

Stopped testing when I got to:
Nosler Accubond 130gr
H4350 53gr.
bullet set .01 off the lands.
Remington 700 CDL
Consistantly shot under 1" at 100 yards.

Another H4831 fan for 45 years!
I'm gonna be loading the 270 myself here in the next few days. I recently puchased some RL17 for this. I have read all of the post regarding the 4831 and I can't hardly ignore this advice. It looks like a no brainer I should have got 4831. I got the RL17 load from the Speer website to use with there new 150 deep curl bullets. Y'all got me thinking otherwise.

I killed 8 deer between 400 and 500 yards with a wimp load with IMR4895 in 270 in 2008 and 2009.

But I am switching to all Hodgdon extreme powder for temperature stability.

H4895
H4350
H4831sc

The reason is that I am shooting at long range and I want to have consistent velocity.
I can be hunting in 10 degrees or 80 degrees weather.

I have worked up almost unbelievable velocity with Re17, but that does not matter.

Just a little update, I thought my problem was the scope, but upon removing the current scope, I noticed that the rear base mount was about an 1/8" higher than the front base mount, which was causing the scope to sit at a downward angle. I replaced the rear base mount with the match to the front one, I then bought a pound of Reloader 19 and some Hornady SST 130 grain bullets, so I loaded some at minimum charge (49 grains) and was able to get a 1 inch group at 100 yards. I had 2 seperate shots that had another bullet touching the same hole 1 inch apart and the 5thy shot was down at the bottom of the both, kinda making the group look like a horseshoe. So I am pretty sure I am on the downhill side of it now. Just want to let everyone know that I appreciate all thier help and ideas. I am very pleased to have a forum like this where individuals can seek help with thier reloading problems. So my thanks goes out to every that helped along the way and to the high road forum.

I shoot a .270 Win and get real good groups with a variety of powders as mentioned (RL19,RL22,H4350, H4831sc). Same as bullets Interlocks, Interbonds, Hot-core, Partioners, Accubonds. But what I noticed that really makes the .270 shine is MAG primers. I can use any of the above mentioned bullets and get great groups using 60 grs of H4831sc Win brass and a CCI mag primer. All different COALs though. Good luck I'd try the mag primers.

I use AR2209 (H4350) and AR2213SC (H4831SC) behind the 130g and 150 Hornady SST. Just about any combination of the above gives me 1 inch groups at 100y. Roughly all to the same point of impact too.

Have settled on the H4831SC for consistency's sake, never lets me down.

Anyone have the starting load for .277 with 130 GR SST, H4350?

and .277 with 140 GR SST H1000?

Had some trouble finding the new (8th edition) manual, but its on the way.

The first powder I tried for the .270 win. was IMR-4350 and it was excellent in every aspect. A 130 gr. BT was consistently 3150 fps and as accurate. I used that powder for about 15-20 yrs. and then started trying a couple others, H1000 which I didn't like at all, and RL19. RL19 performs about the same as IMR-4350.
I tried RL22 also, but it is too slow burning for the .270 win. and thus won't deliver decent velocity cause you can't get enough of it in the case. IMR-4350 and RL19 both operate with compressed charges too, but they are more realistic to .270 win. MV.

IMR 4831 is the only commercial powder I use in my 270. O found a load that worked 20 years ago and that's what I've stuck with.

I occasionally assemble practice ammo using a surplus powder called M2Ball surplus that was sold in 8 lb jugs by a company called River Valley Ordinance back in the early 90's. I bought two jugs and still have about half of it left. As best as I can tell after years of experimenting with it, it's really just H4831.

So I guess it's safe to say I'm a 4831 fan!

I have a buddy who has been loading and shooting a .270 for a LONG time. He always used 4831 and was happy with it until he tried the short cut H4831sc and he fell in love all over again! He claims the short cut version shrunk his SD numbers to low single digits. He has never tried RL-22 but there are a few guys at the range who swear by it but my buddy likes H4831sc too much to change.

I've had excellent results using H4831 with 130gr bullets in the 270. Mike

H4350 H4831 either.H4350 with Sierra 130 gr give great groups and had 2 one shot kills this fall. One buck one pig.

I loved R19 and R22 in the .30-06 but never tried it in the .270. Had the best luck with Winchester 760 with 130 gr on the .270. I don't see anyone else in here that tried that yet?

I always seemed to find something better then the 4831 and 4350. H414 was another favorite.

I wish I would have bought a bunch of H450 before it went out of production. In my old Remington it would put three shots almost touching. 4350, either H or IMR, is almost as good.

H4831

A buddy has had a Browning A-Bolt Stainless Stalker in .270 for years. Back in about 1991 we loaded some test rounds with H4831 and 140 Grain Nosler Ballistic Tips.

The first five rounds we shot went into a nickel sized hole at 100 yards. He has been shooting that same load ever since.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

Once again, you can't go wrong with IMR-4350, but RL19 is probably a little bit better. But RL17 also has a place in the top powder list.
