Tom Selleck on A&E

Heard a rumer he might be the next pres. of the NRA. Any truth to that?
I hope not. I like Tom Selleck a lot as an actor and a freedom-loving American, but I don't like the trend of organizations putting celebrities in leadership positions just so they can attract attention. We need an NRA president who can motivate the members to become more active and will disseminate, without dilution, the RKBA message as envisioned by the FF.

Unfortunately the NRA's pews are filled with sheeple. In this day and age, the sheep love "movie stars", and further (which is beyond my comprehension) put trust in their viewpoints:confused:

The NRA's first objective is to perpetuate their own existence. They accomplish this by playing politics under the guise of freedom fighters.

The NRA can certainly do better financially with a "movie star" than a true, hardcore defender of freedom.

Or you get the other reaction..."Movie stars: what the hell do I care what their opinions are; just entertain me."

I would in general agree with this, but then the thing that bugs me is I really think Tom Selleck would make a good spokesman because from what I've seen of him, he would say the right things not because he was handed a script, but because he really believed them.

I don't like the idea of whoring celebrities for the media attention, but I would hate to see a potentially great spokesman blackballed just because he happens to be a celebrity.

Heston was very good at the job for the same reasons---besides which, he could speak VERY well. One thing about professional actors is that they know how to speak and convey the meaning of the words. Selleck would not be a bad choice.

I do agree, however, that sometimes the NRA comes up with the strangest 'legislative proposals.' Ah, well...

It is sad, but without the media attention, you go nowhere! An event without the media isn't an event. And we know how the mainstream media handles "events". Nooo, they're not biased!

Without being in the headlines, you don't exist! So we need a personality (not a mere celebrity) that gets the attention, and there is noone else to get that than Tom Selleck (Ted Nugent might not draw that attention because rock is not everyone's thing but he belongs to the board of directors).

Tom would be great. A guy who believes it and can articulate it.

He would probably increase the female to make ratio a little too.

Selleck would be OK in my opinion. He's intelligent, well mannered and good looking(according to every woman I know!). As far as the "Nuge" goes, he's a little rough around the edges sometimes, but so was Harlan Carter, and he was very effective in representing the NRA. We need a few hard nosed, no compromise types at the top level of the NRA to kick butt when it needs to be done.

I like Tom, but if the NRA is looking for a new leader perhaps they should not pick him.

What I mean is, they need someone with the power to draw reporters. Someone who is so well known that he/she would get coverage whether they were speaking for the NRA or not. Seems "stars" are about the only ones who can do that much anymore. And if we pick a "star" it will, most likely, need to be one that has his/her "active film" days behind them. Can't see them getting much work in Hollywood after becoming the President of the NRA.

Whomever takes the job, I just ask one thing.

Listen to the members. Treat us as if we matter.

i think that if Tom truly believes what he would be saying then I'm all for it and he could possibly be very good for the NRA

Selleck would be a good choice for the very reason that Heston was. He's a known quantity for the public, well-liked and articulate. He doesn't have to dictate NRA policy, he just has to represent it to the public. (Something that LaPierre doesn't always do well).

The Brady bunch would be nowhere if they hadn't found a somewhat well-known victim to lend his name and wife to their cause.

if anyone wants, i have real media audio clips of the rosie interview, i can email them to whomever PM's me.

We have a whole thread going on possible replacements for Mr. Heston. I'm of the opinion that having a "Celeb Prez" helps - a lot.

Other names that crop up:

James Earl Jones,

Alan Keyes,

Drew Carey (one of my faves, former USMC),

Charlie Daniels (oddball choice, but would actually work well)

several others.
