A "truck gun" doesn't have to be cheap, and probably shouldn't be. Pick a firearm based on quality, and one that fills your needs. Disappointment will follow decisions that are based too heavily on price. I would suggest an AR, at least it would fill my needs.

get an SKS if you need a semi or if you want something a LOT purdier you wouldn't be ashamed of....just get a Marlin 336 and order a williams rear peep sight for it and lose the semi-buckhorn! Fast accurate and PC....the original "truck rifle"-even back when "the truck" had wagon wheels!-LOL ;)

tacticool thuddy thuddy! -AK of the Appiliachians!

I voted for pick up a cheap pump. A mossberg 500 would make a nice one. But in the rifle category, I believe that that the marlins are great guns. A 30-30 will do a lot and they are really rugged.

I voted other because I was gonna say Pump-Gun but if you are gonna go that route then go the 12 gauge.

Depends wholly on your purpose here.
-If you are looking to fend off carjackers then I would say that actually one of the Mossberg JIC guns with the Pistol Grip in 12ga would be a good bet here. They are small enough to swing around in cramped quarters quickly and a shotgun barrel in the face will make a criminal think twice, or at least it should.

-If you are looking for an animal gun then I can't help much. Probably looking for a semi-auto or pump gun (anything but bolt) in an intermediate caliber.

truck rifle

Short Mosin's around me are $300 and up. Long originals are $120 and up.

There are about 20 Marlins 60's avail. here from $60 to $100.

SKS's are $350+

You can find Marlin .30-30's for $250+

H&R, NEF's are $300 for any rifle caliber, shotguns are $60+

Pump shotguns can be had for $69 up.

Just how bad do you want a "Truck Gun?" All my trucks have pumps, if I can't hit it with buck or slugs...I don't feel like wasting lead.

Hello friends and neighbors // Remington 870 Express Magnum 20ga. with 21" VR barrel and 13" stock.

3" buck and slugs should do the trick. I bought mine, a 1993 unused, for $185.00 OTD.

In the "other gun" catagory, a rifle to match your CCW caliber.(**not under $200.00) My Interarms Model 92 Lever Action .357/.38 does this nicely weather I'm carryng a .357 or .38 revolver./// $325.00 FTF

Or a Marlin Papoose .22 breakdown rifle with floating case. Mine was around $200.00 OTD with some other items thrown in, so say $185.00 OTD

These three where purchased with in the last year and a half so prices are fairly current.

Some other things to consider.....In Ohio you can NOT !! carry a loaded long gun in your vehicle.
Even if you have a CHL a long gun needs to be empty, and ammo in another container.
Empty in Ohio means: No loaded magazines, either box, or tubular ( for you lever guys).
Which means any long gun will be totally empty, so fast manual loading will be a must. That leaves the box fed semi's out.
Now bolt, or in the case of the SKS, ammunition is ok if it is in a stripper clip, or enbloc. These are not considered magazines.
So advantages go to lever rifles, or pump shot guns. Or the SKS, or possibly an Lee Enfield, as those two can be loaded fast using stripper clips.
The lever action you can open the lever drop a round in, get the rifle into action and continue to load the rifle, while having that important round in the chamber.
You can due the same with the pump shotgun.
A bolt, you can either try to load four, or five rounds real fast before you can get the rifle into action, or load and fire one at a time until you get the chance to open the bolt, and top the magazine off.

IMO the VZ.58 seems like the perfect rifle because it has a stripper clip guide (see Ohio law above), intermediate chambering, lightweight, folding stock (very compact), and is very rugged...unfortunately it is well out of your budget.

:)

What about a M48 Mauser? 5 round stripper clips, plenty cheap, and a super strong action.

I know nothing about Ohio, but you can go to Walmart and get a new Mossberg pump with a 28' barrel for less than $200.

I have had various truck guns for the last 25 yrs. This is my experience.
My choices:-----
#3---single shot 12 ga.: inexpensive; expendable; reliable; versatile. Every game animal in Ill can be legally taken w/ shotgun. Took too long to dig out from behind the seat. Not enough range sometimes.

#4---sks: worked o.k.; had decent range; needed a scope for 100yd+ shots.; almost too much gun in some instances...(varmit inside a barn, etc). Also took too long to put into use from behind seat. Ammo not as easily obtained as 12 ga, or .22.

#1---.22 auto pistol: good for informal plinking at the end of a country road; big enough for most critters (around here); quick to put into action; small enough to carry decretely in the console; cheap, plentiful ammo; more likely to slip into a pocket or waistband when you find yourself in a situation than dragging out a long-gun.

#2---6" .357 mag revolver: Powerful enough for anything; quick to get up and running; easily stowed; NOISY...earplugs required!; I was afraid of it getting stolen; not as likely to pull out and plink with as the .22; I did feel pretty well armed when I had it in the console.

Long gun for truck

While it definitely violates your $200.00 range it's hard to beat a Mossberg 500 12 G pumpgun. I own multiple SKS, Mosin, Mauser, etc military rifles circa WWII but the versatility, reliability and simplicity not to mention availabilty and variety of ammo makes the pump 12 G the hands down winner in virtually any situation. Consider: On the light, not necessarily lethal end you have rock salt and bird shot. On the high lethality end you have alternating loads of double ought and rifled slugs. The slugs are good out to 100 yards. For large areas at close range you can use the stacked ceramic discs guaranteed to place a cloud of flying razor edged shrapnel between you and your adversaries. There are a number of other "specialty" loads available in 12 G. If a pump gun is too much of a budget buster there are always a number of single and double barrel shotguns available in almost any market. Personally speaking, I like the idea that rounds loosed in the adrenaline drenched situation involved in self defense are unlikely to penetrate walls or travel outside of my line of sight.

i keep a keltec sub2000 in my truck. they come in 9mm or 40s&w, share mags with glocks berettas or s&w handguns. it folds in half and handgun ammo is pretty cheap and so are extended mags. it's fun as hell to shoot too.

Al thought it exceeds the 200.00 limit I would pick a Ruger K77 syn/ss 44 Rem mag with iron sights. Light, short fast to handle and packs a punch.

For a bit over $200, a Yugo Mauser, but only if it would not be banged up much. Can you hit anything with Mauser sights? Ammoman sells the corrosive primer ammo for .20/rd.

If it is to be banged up and being extremely common and the cheapest full-power 'battle rifle', a 91/30 with a very bright bore.

For a semi-auto and at a higher price, a Norinco SKS, or Yugo-with the grenade launcher removed.

I got a Maverick 88 awhile ago for $206 shipped. I haven't tried it on a range yet, but they function nice if you oil the action. Not sure if they have them in 20ga, if that's the caliber you're looking for. They also fit Mossberg 500 stocks if you would want to put a pistol grip on it.

My truck gun is cheap, picked up this bubbarized MN carbine for $25.00 a couple years ago. I scout scoped and made a lace up cheek piece riser for it.

As another poster said, now has a slip on recoil pad for full power loads, for reduced loads it is super accurate with .316" hard cast GC boolits.

Pump shotgun, pump rifle, lever action rifle or sks. All dandy truck guns. I chose the sks and it's not much slower to get into action than any of the rest if the mag's full with the bolt closed over the top-most round.

Just yank the bolt and start pickin off nuisance targets. And if those nuisance targets happen to be in or behind vehicles, the 7.62x39 has outstanding ability to penetrate many material barriers.

And semi auto beats pump or lever ANYthing ANY day.

Practice with your stripper clips and you've got a very effective tool to transition from Zero to Highly Aggressive in a Bolt Yank.
