I've been recently struck with the idea of getting a shotgun to throw in the trunk of my commuter car. while I have a number of 12 gauges, I've always liked the Remmington 870, and I would love an excuse to get one.

Here's the thing, I like excessive guns.

I like the idea of getting an 870 Super magnum express, the 3.5 inch cartridge just gives me the warm fuzzys.

I don't need a goose gun, so an 18 or 20 inch barrel would be plenty, its going to be a close quarters combat gun.

The only aftermarket shotgun stock that I've ever had a preference for is the 'law enforcement only' all metal topfolding stock that remmington made many years ago for the 870 police.

for a forend, its gonna be a surefire, I don't know the difference between the modles, but whatever is the coolest.

The gun won't be seeing much in the way of maintenence, It will never leave the trunk, so the marine finish is perfect for me...

So the plan is, buy the super magnum express, chop it, restock it, put one of the old style 870 mag tube extensions on it (the ones with the bayonett lug) throw a heat shield on it (for kicks) and send it in for nickel plating after having REMINGTON 870 POLICE SUPER MARINE MAGNUM engraved on the side.

is there any problems I'm not thinking of? any modifications I should consider? will the 870 super magnum accept a standard 870's stock? will the old style police topfolding stocks compleatly dissasemble for plating?

Thoughts? Opinions? is there anything better for the 870 platform? remember its gotta be small, low maintenence, rugged, and excessive.

3.5 inch super magnum :what:

...as an very lightly-built, bony individual, just the thought is making my shoulder ache

If excess is the name of the game, a 10-gauge magnum might be in order. I've heard that 10-gauge systems are somewhat superior to really hot 12-gauges. Can't really say, I've never compared them.

Its gotta be a 12 gauge, I'd like to be able to run the common shells I have around the house through it, plus I have .357 mag adapters for 12 gauge.

I've thought of the 10 gauge, I've owned 10's before, I just standardized on 12 gauges, it makes things easier.

Recoil isn't really a problem for me I'm 6'5" 260lbs, and the more a gun kicks, the more I like it. :D

Someday I may get a Roadblocker in 10 gauge mag, but thats a long ways down the road and strictly as a collectable, not as a shooter.

I sure hope you have somebody sweet in your life to kiss the OWIE on your cheekbone and make it all better, after you cork off a 3.5" maggie numb with your topfolding kewl points metal stock. That's gonna leave a mark, I guarantee you. Maybe even a scar.

Would offer practical advice but practical seems not to be the point here, so no need to waste the electrons.

Good Lord, I went to Low Recoil loads awhile back. I'm hurtin' just thinking about 3.5s.

LOL!! :D

Lee, cut it out. You're gonna get me fired.

I'm not trying to be some gung ho mall ninja type. I just would like to have an excessive and somewhat impractical gun. I have practical shotguns for hunting, home defense, and breaking skeet. This is going to be a fun gun, and it doesn't have to play well with others.

I always have the option of running lower powered rounds if the 3.5 kicks my butt too badly.

But I want to have the option.

isnt the knoxx copstock a top folder? maybe thatll tame the recoil down to the normal recoil levels.

far as a trunk gun i say slather it up with motorcycle chain wax and bag it up in plastic with a dessicant. a pump gun shouldnt be bothered too much from the stickiness of the chain wax after it sets up.

What is a .357 mag adapter?

a .357 mag adapter is a hardened aluminum shell that containes a chamber and a short section of rifled barrel which allows you to shoot .357 and .38 special through any 12 gauge. It cycles like a normal shell in 2 3/4 guns although its overall lenght is 3 inches. Its just a good shtf thing to allow you more versitility in ammo. They are suprisingly acurate and have a decent amount of power considering the short barrel length.

yes the knoxx copstock is a topfolder, I just don't much like em. perhapse after I get my 'wicked cool booboo scar' I'll change my mind. but I've always been impressed with the quality of workmanship on the factory Law enforcement only units.

As far as finish goes, It's actually not all that bad to get electroless nickle done, and some of the apeal of this is to have a gun that appears to be a factory special edition. I have a few other projects that can get plated at the same time, and I may be able to talk the company into a discount.

those adapters are neat. and actually fairly accurate, considering the barrels are only like 3/4 inch. i could hit 4 inch sized targets pretty easily at about 45-50 yards. a bit of drop on em tho.

what suprised me was the durability of them. after more than 100 shots it only has minor scuffish looking marks on the rim from the extractor. it was still a solid tool. id guess the life of them would be on the far side of 1000 rounds minimum.

and recoil is nil. even with .357 magnum.

:uhoh:

Trunk guns:
NEF Single Shot Youth in 20 ga. Many Many folks are using one because I let them shoot mine. Fixed Modified choke from the factory shoots some THE best slug groups, Slugs being MY preferred defensive loading, shoots some THE best #3 buckshot pattens and pellet loads for small game.

I do NOT recommend these single shot shotgun in 12 gauge.
I recommend 20 gauge and less in size. See Rule of 96 as to why.

Trunk Guns: Since I have been one that professional thugs wanted to kidnap for the type of work, and access to - My Trunk guns have been simple, reliable, shotguns with 2 3/4" loadings. 12 ga, and 20 ga. Practice would be 100- 300 slugs fired on one day.

Then again I was only shooting ~ 25K shotgun rounds in a year of 12 gauge alone. Then add the round counts for 20g, 28ga, and .410.

I mean no big deal to shoot 300 rds everyday, meaning 2100 shotgun shells fired in a week.

Now a buddy of mine won a Mossberg 835. We shot 3.5" buckshot, and both he and I had slower times on follow up shots. Same gun, and he had to fell a rabid dog ~ 70 #s. Two good hits, with 3.5 buckshot, did NOT stop that dog. The 2 3/4" slug did, and a quick reload of 2 3/4" slug felled the second rabid dog of similar weight.

This mirrors Mine and others experince of using 2 3/4" buckshot, even 3" buckshot on rabid critters.

H&H Hunter, a member here, that goes after Dangerous Game, also shared his experiences. He goes to hunt Dangerous Game - repeat this, to simply state, as he does, one is NOT at the top of the food chain. Critters will hunt you down, kill you and eat you.

Buckshot did NOT stop serious situations where said critters wanted to EAT one of the party. 2 3/4" slugs are stoked in these shotguns all the time...except when back at camp to fell birds with pellet loads for the camp pot.

Trunk guns: Perhaps MY definiton and those of others around differ from others. This gun may have to be used in a very very serious situation. It may mean a smaller person than I/ WE have to use it. It may mean I have/ smaller person may have to use to fell game to feed us.

A bigger person can shoot a smaller shotgun - a smaller person cannot effectively shoot a bigger shotgun.

Meaning, I am down and a smaller person needs to use MY trunk gun to stop an immediate threat ...smaller person can do , whether I am dead or alive.

My world differs from some I suppose. I want a reliable shotgun with its ammo, I want it easy to tote, scoot, shoot, move, and allow me fast , accurate follow up hits.

Quick- you are in hotel /moteland the BG has your wife, gf, kid, maybe already slit the throat of one - Can YOU make a head shot with your trunk gun and take out the BG before he slits another throat and NOT hit the wife, gf, kid?

Can you do it? Have you practices this? Can you take the shot!?!?

You are surprised, out of breath from running to room, sweaty, the bile coming up your throat, heart is beating as if it wants come out of your chest...BG raises the knife and puts to the throat...Can you take the shot this split second!

I have never been hunting for dangerous game. I have been hunted by Predators that wished me harm. I am not the only one here that has...

Just my perspectives from experiences that shaped perspectives.

One learns from mistakes - less expensive, and painful if someone else's mistakes.

I have been a pallbearer. I have also worked in a Main OR. Expensive mistakes.

Dead is forever.

Trunk guns are serious to me...very darn serious.

"This is going to be a fun gun..."
========================

Yup. Building it will be fun. SHOOTING it with Roman Candle length shells and a Rem steel topfolder will be a different matter, I think. I could let you borrow the one I took off a secondhand 870 riot gun I bought early in the 1970s- if I could still find it. I didn't sell it, it's still around here somewhere. Marked "Patent Pending" IIRC.

But 'tis your gun your money and your fun. Sally forth in good style and enjoy yourself, life is too short to do otherwise!

Nothing wrong with a gun just for the hell of it. Most of mine are just that toys. However as far as a folder with 3 1/2" magnums I can only think of one word "OUCH". I have an 870 in this chambering with a full stock, and just thinking about shooting those loads makes my shoulder bruise, and I am 6'5 220lbs. Put my wife on her butt, and busted her nose the first/last time she shot it. Fun is fun but folding stocks and artillery shells do not mix.

Thanks lee,

These stocks are getting pretty hard to find nowadays, although I'd prefer to just buy it outright, thatway I won't feel bad if the first shot twists it like a pretzle or it gets damaged some other as yet unforseen way.

I know its going to beat me up pretty good shooting it, but hey to each there own, sometimes a guy just wants to get his junk knocked around a little.
