Utah Gathering - Let's plan a big one.

We had that small Gathering Saturday... Not bad... but not like the big gatherings we used to have.

Let's hold a Gathering June 12th. Can we all agree to that date?

Let's do it at the PMAA Range... Nice middle ground location for everyone.
PMAA range is like 5 minutes up the canyon from SLC heading East on 80. You take the East Canyon Exit and it's right there on the right. 5 bucks range fee... but I think it's worth it... Out doors, but sheltered, higher altitude so it wont be so hot... and easy to get to, no 4X4 required.

A Utah shoot sounds great. I live in the West Desert, which is separated from Oblivion by a screen door. :D I haven't shot formally since the rifle club in high school (remember those days?).
I'm more accustomed to shooting cap and ball revolvers, but `spose I could bring my repro 1873 Winchester rifle and old, damascus, double-barreled shotgun with black powder shells.
I'd enjoy seeing some of the faces attached to names in here. But I doubt many of you would enjoy seeing me --- after all, I am the "ugly cat."
Count me in.
I offer my services to write a press release for the event. I was a journalist for 12 years before I moved to Utah in 1997. Letting the media know in a professional, non-inflammatory manner would go a long way toward getting it to attend.

Sounds good...

Let's see... we just need to decided upon the location.
Not too far away... ST George is like - OUT of the question... sorry guys...
Utah Shooting Academy is too grungy... The old Bowl is hard to get into unless you have a Jeep.

Rangemasters?

We've got a couple of places out in the west desert that people in cars could get to.

We also could see about reserving a part of the range at Wahsatch Shooters Assoc. in Kaysville. I know a couple of the RO's there.

Where do the Utah Rednecks go when they go shooting?

We just go out to the west desert, like at Delle. However, there are quite a few places near Tooele that are probably closer to SLC. I know of a few nice places we could throw lead in the Tooele Valley, if anybody's interested.

Wes

We have some good places George. Like Wes said, they are out in the west desert. Not too far off of highway 89. We could easily draw out a map or put or some paper plate signs. You should come join us on a shoot before the "big" one.

Hey, just saw the thread and I already marked my calendar.

A friend and I were thinking about ordering some Tannerite (http://tannerite.com/ ) to take out to the west desert and blow things up. Might not be the sort of thing to invite the press to though. Wouldn't want them to get the wrong impression...:p

I like George's idea of having some friendly competition set up. That would be a lot more fun than just shooting trash at a dump. Don't get me wrong, I love shooting trash at the dump. That's why I bought the SKS after all. :D

West desert is nice, but the dust can be bad and the subsequent cleanup can be a pain in the rear. Theres also the issue of heat. How about someplace up around Heber or even up towards Strawberry? I have never shot up there, but it's only about an hour away from the valley from either SLC or Provo, plus it has pretty scenery, nice temperatures, and its not too dusty. Anybody know a place up there where we can shoot?

We've got a good spot near Grantsville, in the Stansbury mountains that is pretty nice. There are trees and grass, so there is shade and places to sit. It's also a little cooler, since it's closer to the mountains.

If that sounds appealing to anyone, perhaps I we could use that (I still need to find out if it's private property... It's not posted, but still...).

Wes

EDIT: Did I mention the mormon crickets? :D They're a load of fun to shoot -- especially with scoped .22s.

I'm still working on getting detail direction or a map, in case you guys want to take the dive, but what I can tell you off the top of my head is that it is near Grantsville Reservoir.

George, I don't know where you live, but I'll assume for now that it's in or near the Salt Lake Valley.

Edit: New instructions on the way. Look at the newer posts for updated directions.

Of course, I'll brush up on instructions and post a map here if we decide that it's the place, and I'll make big THR signs to help you get there.

I need to find out whether or not it's private property... just not sure how to go about that. I doubt that it is -- I've shot there a dozen times and only once seen another person in the vicinity, but it would probably be the right thing to do. Anybody have any idea how I would do that?

Okay, I've brushed up my instructions, and am working on a map. I'll do this beforehand so that you all may decide if you want to make the drive. ;)

Stand by.
Wes

EDIT: Bad news, guys. It appears that upon further investigation that the spot in question is private property, and is thus no longer valid as a shooting spot. :(

I'm gonna miss that place. :(

Back to the ol' drawing board.

Yeah, I know of mapquest, but you need an address for directions... there is no address for wilderness.

Hopefully we can get a decent group, wherever we decide to meet. As long as I can get work off (which I'm pretty sure I can) and can make the drive, I'll be there.

Anybody else have a suggested spot? If we have a TON of people come, it might be better to go to Delle where the URSA shoots, since there is backstop on 3 sides. Lots o' room for lots o' people.

Wes

Anyone interested:

I'll be going to the crossroads show on 4/17. Should be there most of the day. I'll post what I'll be wearing later, so you can pick me out.

Food for thought: Even though some of you may not like the jerky, jewelry etc., they take a head count as you go in. The more of us that go, even if just to associate with like-minded people, adds a feather in the cap of 2A supporters.

I'd really like to meet PRCCW and/or Correia there, I'd like to support local businessmen.
