I thought it might be a neat idea to get VEPR and use it as sort of an RPK type weapon since the semi RPK's are soo expensive.

First I would start with a VEPR in 7.62X39 with a 20" barrel...

Then get a bipod...

Some 75 round drums...

A red dot scope...

And maybe even a "gat trigger" for fun...

Seems to me like a relatively inexpensive way to get the RPK feel and firepower. What do you guys think?

Sounds like a pretty good idea to me if you want an RPK. After all the VEPR is an RPK, you're just putting the bipod and drum or 40 round mag back on. If it were me, I'd put the original RPK type wood on it too.
True RPK Receiver. Stiffer and longer wearing than any other AK receiver. Made for Soviet Squad Automatic Weapon.
The RPK, on the other hand, was designed as, what we would refer to as a squad automatic weapon. The RPK could also be fired in either the semi or fully-automatic modes. Squad automatic weapons, as deployed, are more frequently fired in the fully automatic mode. For this reason, one usually sees the RPK pictured with an ultra-high capacity magazine such as a 75 round drum or 40 round box magazine instead of the standard 30 round magazine typically used with the AK.
To handle the sustained automatic fire, the RPK was designed to be much stronger. First, the sheet metal of the receiver of the RPK is 50% thicker than that of the AKM47. Next, the trunion of the RPK is larger and stronger than that of the AK47 or AKM47. The trunion is the part to which the barrel is connected and into which the bolt locks. Because the trunion is larger, the receiver must be bulged out to accept the larger trunion. Hence the above mentioned bulges on the RPK receiver.

Go for it, it's a mystery to me why some people pay such a huge premium for RPKs/RPK kits when the difference amounts to a slightly thicker receiver, a slightly heavier barrel, and a bipod. For Yugo guns the receiver isn't even thicker.

Domino, I've can get really good prices on Veprs for THR members. (done it a few times) :) Send me a message when you're interested.

I'd definately be interested in getting a VEPR in the near future. I will most certainly contact you when the time comes, thanks! :)

I thought the Vepr's were in short supply as Robinson worked on the XCR's production... used to read the Vepr's message board.

They ARE sweet, and cheaper than also-very-good Arsenal.
