What donor action would you recommend for a build? Gonna be a short action, 6mm build.......

Does it have to be a short action or can it be a long action?

what are you going to use it for? hunting? benchrest? prone?

does it need to be single shot? repeater? detachable mags?

Out of all I usually play with I like my surgeon action the best... Bat and Lawton are very nice as well. These are pricey pieces of work though, and not exactly donor lol.

I have had very good luck with trued rem 700 actions and VERY good luck with trued savage actions. The 700 came from an SPS and the savage came from a model 12.

Bolt action. Either removable mag or blind mag. Mostly benchrest.

Figured Remington since it is widely "re-used". Never had a Savage or shot one before.

Local FFL has a NIB Marlin XS7 on the shelf. Don't know anything about them. Don't know about the quality factor of them. Although Boyds is making stocks for them. They must figure that they will be around for awhile........

CDNN has new FN actions for sale.

6mm Rem will fit in a short action, but you have to be careful about COL. If it is a bench gun and want use the heavy bullets, and seat them long for more powder space, you could run into problems if you get past ~3.0" or so. At COL of 2.8" to 2.9" works fine in a short action.

The Marlin by all accounts is a fine accurate rifle, I enjoy my Savages, others like Remington actions. With the right tools, swapping barrels and headspacing a Savage or a Marlin can be a DIY affair.

Both of my Savages shoot 1/2" groups, neither one had had any action work. One has the factory barrel and is pre Accutrigger (24" Model 110FP .308 Win) one has a McGowen barrel (22" Model 11 .358 WSSM). I didn't do it myself, I sent it to McGowen and they installed the barrel.

To build a comparable rifle a savage will cost a fraction of what say the 700 will cost you simply cause you can order a fully chambered barrel and install it yourself in many cases less than what the raw blank will cost.

Adjustable headspace is a beautiful thing.

Krochus, I know nothing about savages. What model would work best? Can a floorplate be added to an older 110 action?

If you want to go aftermarket...R700. Savage doesn't even offer a fraction of the availability that Remington does.

How do you figure?? Name something you can buy for a rrem that you can't for a sav

I can buy anything for a savage you can buy for a rem but there's a plethora of parts you can buy for a savage that simply cannot be made for a rem

Such as a fully chambered and threaded drop in barrel from any number of top notch manufacturers. Can you spend $320 for a shilen barrel for a remington that will screw on in minutes at my reloading bench and go shoot .25" groups?

No you can't

Can you buy a bolt head that will allow the same action to go from being a 300wsm mag to a 17 rem and back again?

no you can't

Can you buy a right hand bolt left hand eject single shot action from remington?

no you can't

In this day and age actually building a remington 700 for accuracy is purely an exercise in ancestor worship. Heck! If I was gonna set out to "build" a remington I wouldn't even bother starting with a remington and would instead opt for one of the remington700 PATTERN aftermarket actions

McGowen even has the most popular Savage barrels ready to go, just call them up, tell them what chambering you want and they ship it out in a week or so.

$260 for CroMoly, $289 for stainless.

Here's a Savage sporter action for $400. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=200359754

Varmint and Target actions as krochus mentioned are also available. Add another $100-$300 for the stock you want.

I'm interested though, why the 6mm (I assume you mean 6mm Remington) instead of the much more widely available .243 Win? There's not a hill of beans difference with bullets 100gr and under (assuming you reload) looking at Hodgdon's data.

6mm Family. Gonna be something in a 6BR, 6XC, PPC or other is what I have in mind right now.

Are all the threads and pitches the same for all the actions or are they all different?

Bolt action. Either removable mag or blind mag. Mostly benchrest.

For a rifle built primarily for benchrest, I would talk to Walkalong or someone else who has experience in this type of shooting. Each type of shooting has it's own set of demands, that people who participate in it are well aware of. No sense in reinventing the wheel, or worse yet, getting it wrong altogether.

Don

Personal benchrest, not competition shooting.

Which is better in general, a removable mag or hinged floorplate?

Neither!!! Single shot with without a mag cutout in the bottom of the action.

You'll almost never see a benchrest rifle that's anything other than a single shot. I even had the ejector removed from my junk so I didnt have to chase cases.

I strongly urge you to look into a savage LRPV action

But of the two you mention blind is better, hinged introduces another point for bedding problems you don't want to deal with in a rifle built for the sole purpose of accuracy

The gun I shot in the competition in my signline is a savage single shot bolt action. You can order them from savage in several configurations. And if you go with a savage you can do all the work yourself.

OK got'cha, 6BR and 6XC use the .473" bolt face (.308 Win) so you get that automatically. Savage doesn't make a PPC bolt face, but you can get one.

If it's a bench gun I'd definitely go for the Savage Target Action and make it a single shot. There are a few options... right port, left port, dual ports.

http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/actions/target/

All Savage small shank actions (i.e non-magnum) have the same thread size and pitch. The Varmint action comes with a detachable box magazine. The Sporter action comes with a hinged floorplate.

I'm not sure of the COL of the 6XC or whether it will fit the short action magazine. I'm seeing 2.740" for the 115gr, which should be fine.

ETA: just looked at McGowen, they have chamber reamers available in 6mm BR Remington or 6mm BR Lapua; Shilen has several different 6mmBR reamers (depending on how much neck clearance you want.)

You can get the Single shot action with the normal loading port or with a solid top and port just big enough to load thru.

I just wanted to bump this thread because I may have been mistaken about the shank diameter. Ther are two sizes, small shank and large shank, for several years the magnums have been large shank.

I also think that the target actions are large shank actions. Please verify before ordering a barrel.

How do you figure??

Remington has always been superior to Savage and will continue to be in every aspect.

How many aftermarket actions have a R700 footprint?

Many

How many aftermarket actions have a Savage footprint?

????

Again, no comparison.

I see that Bergara Barrels is offering drop in barrels for the Remington 700 using a barrel nut similar to the Savage system. $340 for .308 Win barrel in stainless with a 1:10 twist ... not bad. They don't have a huge inventory in terms of different chamberings but it's a start.

Check out savageshooters.com. I have a swap barrel .30-06/.35 whelen, both smoa with hand loads.
