I am starting to compete in more 3-gun matches (man, but they are fun!) and am at the point now where I could easily go too far and end up with a evil black Christmas tree loaded down with ornaments and only vaguely resembling a rifle. Sure, it would look all "tactical" and stuff and impress the guys at the range.......until I actually starting trying to knock down poppers at 150 yds with offhand shots and shooting on the fly at silhouettes. Then I think my scores might look like I needed glasses, not another accessory hanging off a heavily-laden piccatiny rail.
Example: Fobus has some new M44S handguards that will carry stuff on four sides. But do I need it? The items on my M4gery which I personally consider essential are a red-dot scope (Holosight), a flip-up rear sight (ARMS #40 - so I can transition to iron sights if needed), and a Giles sling (so I can let the rifle hang free and draw and fire my handgun). I do have an Accuracy Speaks single-stage trigger, a Hogue grip, and a recoil pad from E&L, which are all very nice but I don't think they are necessary.
What do you consider "essential" for your 3-gun rifle - light, laser, NV adapter, vertical foregrip?
