I am starting to compete in more 3-gun matches (man, but they are fun!) and am at the point now where I could easily go too far and end up with a evil black Christmas tree loaded down with ornaments and only vaguely resembling a rifle. Sure, it would look all "tactical" and stuff and impress the guys at the range.......until I actually starting trying to knock down poppers at 150 yds with offhand shots and shooting on the fly at silhouettes. Then I think my scores might look like I needed glasses, not another accessory hanging off a heavily-laden piccatiny rail.

Example: Fobus has some new M44S handguards that will carry stuff on four sides. But do I need it? The items on my M4gery which I personally consider essential are a red-dot scope (Holosight), a flip-up rear sight (ARMS #40 - so I can transition to iron sights if needed), and a Giles sling (so I can let the rifle hang free and draw and fire my handgun). I do have an Accuracy Speaks single-stage trigger, a Hogue grip, and a recoil pad from E&L, which are all very nice but I don't think they are necessary.

What do you consider "essential" for your 3-gun rifle - light, laser, NV adapter, vertical foregrip?

Ideally for a fighting AR, I would add an Aimpoint with flip up backup sights, IR designator, and some AN PVS-7 Gen 3+ goggles. But for a 3-gun rifle, the stock rifle will do just fine.

as I do some carbine matches, I'd think you want the above mentioned equipment, but you might want to have some way to carry said magazines!

I found a nice drop leg 2 magazine pouch at a place called CQB Solutions. Haven't used it yet, but there is another carbine match in a couple weeks, that I might get the chance to at!

Then a decent holster for the pistol and a couple spare mags for it...

Matthew,

I would be interested in knowing how the double mag pouch works out. I don't have a method for organizing my shotgun shells and AR mags and this puts me at a disadvantage timewise.

Have you tried any of the Blackhawk gear?

Rockjock,

It should work out well... it's similar to the two mag pouch shown on the page that 444 put up, but I don' think it's divided, it's just one compartment for both mags. It's the same drop leg, with the thigh strap wraparound...

I just ordered it, so I don't have it yet... ;)

The rigs shown there are a little extreme... 3 gun is more of a game, and the carbine matches I shoot in are a little more towards the 'practical' side. There are some guys that do get 'tac'd out' for them. They are run similar to IDPA, but they are more like SHTF situations, so the tac gear goes.

I'll get some pics of it when I get it!
