I'll admit I'm naive. What does it mean for a rifle to be advertised as preban? I read another thread that said the ban was over in '04 except in some states that extended it.

What's the big deal about preban if the ban is over?

Like you said, some states still require it. That's why firearm manufacturers still sell them.

It's silly if you ask me; the differences consisting of a ground down bayonet lug and no flash suppressor/compensator.

It's basically limited to those who live in NY and MA, the only two states where mirrors of the old Federal AWB still apply. It's asinine garbage that needs to be stricken from the books in those states.

People sometimes claim that the word "pre-ban" is also used as a smooth marketing gimmick, especially at gun shows.
I've seen it often at the auction site "Gunbroker.com".

This entire topic is too new to me (53 years old) and I don't understand much of it. Bought my first gun last October.

Maybe there is a website which offers clear and objective information on the overall AWB topic?

Again, all it means is that the weapon or magazines were produced prior to September 13, 1994. The reason you see it on gunbroker is because it opens up the possibility of selling the weapons to a broader audience (ie, people in NYS and MA who might otherwise not be able to purchase a weapon in its original configuration).

Funny story, I was at the range the other day and I was shooting my AR. There was a guy there who was telling me he had a friend who is really into the AR platform owns more than a few of them. Well, this friend of his just figured out a couple of months ago that the ban had sunsetted in '04.

***?? I didn't ask how that was possible, but probably should have. This guy is probably the guy that has been keeping the market for pre-ban stuff going strong.

I thought pre-ban was a term you used to artificially inflate the value of the things you greatly overpaid for during the ban..............

Vermont, Pre-Ban means before the ban, in other words, not neutered. Post-Ban means the rifles that were made after the ban became law. Those are the ones without bayonet lugs and compensators.

Right. I assumed that those manufactured before the ban took effect were grandfathered in and so were able to be transferred. That is why I thought this guy would still be buying them (probably at a premium price).

If we keep this up, we will need MORE terms--perhaps 'post-sunset'.

Excepting certain places, pre-ban is now old-worn-out marketing. It also perpetuates the concept of a 'ban' being in place currently or possible in the future.

We need to further confuse with some new terms for the 'pre-86 problem' we DO have still.

In the vast majority of states, it simply means that the seller using the phrase is trying to take you for a long ride by artificially hypeing the value.

look up the selling price of a real IMI Galil,or H&K rifle,or Belgium FAL or Norinco AK and pre-ban takes on a real meaning.

Thankfully we can now get copycats at a reasonable price but they are not the real deal.Though that doesn't mean they aren't as good though. Why would anyone by a Belgium FAL for $3000 when they can have a DSA for half that works just as good?

I still don't understand why that 1989 ban can't be done away with, stupid stupid stupid...............
