You might be able to get a Thompson Center barrel maker to whip up a smoke pole for you. NEF advertised a rifle chambered for 7.62x39 on their website at one time. It wouldn't be a bad idea for them to look at one in x54R.

Winchester High Walls were made in that caliber. According to some posts I've read the 7.62x54R was the most chambered caliber despite what American's might think!

Baikal double and single rifles are chambered in it too.

It's not unheard of in drillings from what I've heard as well.

PKM is outta my price range :(

sorry im not up to par with the terms but is the M1895 a "highwall" you are refering to?

if so, im aware of it, and its kinda the reason i started the thread. i thought it was a nice rifle and am considering hunting one down. and was wondering what else was around for this "obsolete" chambering. ( my MN needs a brother.)

anyone know anything on the SMLE conversion?

It wouldn't surprise me, with something like 25 million Mosins, plus millions of machine guns including Maxims, plus all the aircraft guns, tank guns, sniper rifles, etc. etc. Over 110 years of production adds up! The only one that could beat it in numbers would be the x39, of course.

that's easy

Winchester M1895. 7,62x54R was the most popular original chambering for this gun, some 300,000 of 415,00 total were made for Russian military contract in 1915-17.

Max may correct me but wasn't the Medved carbine made in 7.62 x 54?
Original Medved (bear) carbines were made in 9,3x54R - a special hunting cartridge developed in USSR by necking out the 7,62x54R. This version was made in limited numbers between 1965 and 1974. In 1974 it was replaced in production by Medved-3, which was same gun but chambered for local 7,62x51 (down-loaded version of .308 win). The latest version is Medved-4 in .308Win, which is a very limited order gun.

Not to start another Winter War here, but it was my understanding that the in 9.3x54R was in fact developed by the Finns, along with an array of other wildcats on the 54R cartridge.

It well could be true; the tech transfer was mutual during post-Ww2 period - Finns used many Soviet / Russian weapons, so it is possible that someone just copied Finn cartridge.
BTW, there were other x54R based cartridges in USSR, such as 6,5x54R, developed for sport shooting (i believe it was for Running Boar events).
Also, there were developmental 7,62x54 rimless military cartridges, but, unfortunately, this effort never went past experimental stage.

Glockfan.45, DP-27 flat pan magazine holds only 49 (early) or 47 (late production) rounds; thicker DA / DT drums (incompatible with DP) held 69 rounds.
More info on DP-27 is here

RE: 9.3x54R

First read about this and the Meved in a Shooter's Bible where Finn Aagard and another guy went to the USSR to hunt red deer, there were 'issued' Meveds for the hunt. (Not allowed to bring own rifles). This article ran in the late 70's or early 80's. The article also mentioned the possible Finnish origin of the round.

Thought for sure I'd seen the Medved in 7.62x54 mentioned as well. No matter, thanks for the super info as always Max!

wait im semi confused.

iv only be able to find limited info on the "Medved" one states that its no longer beign made and that is was essentialy a hunting SVD similar to the "tigr"

is this true?

( actualy i take that back, the Medved is on the Izhmash website.)

I believe the 7.62x54Russian is a good conversion on Lee Enfields and an improvement in accuracy is generally achieved. do a search on the 303 page.

Not sure why you'd bother, though as the .303 is so similar in many ways. Requires barrel remove (alot of work and $$$) for little gain in performance.
