165gr and 180gr are the 2 most popular.
135gr has a few fans due to its ability to not penetrate as far as the other two rounds lessoning the chance of collateral damage.

Personally i prefer 165gr in Winchester Ranger T-Series or Federal HST.
Next would come some of the 180gr specialty loads from places like Double Tap, Buffalo Bore and a few other places that can get these rounds too 1050-1200 fps+

No, if you want to duplicate the .357 Magnum with an autoloader, you need a 10mm Auto. A 10mm Auto with a 135 gr JHP @ ~1600 fps is an impressive number, though I actually prefer the 180 gr JHP @ ~1250 to 1300 fps. There are plenty of 10mm Auto loads with velocities in the 1300 to 1600 fps range and energies in the 550 to 750 foot pounds range that are every bit as impressive as anything to ever stoke a .357 Magnum, but the .40 Short and Weak need not apply. The .40 S&W is what people who don't want magnum performance from an auto get. In fact, that was the whole point...

In my experience with the .40, it seems that all of the pistols I have fired have an accuracy preference for either light or heavy. My glock 23 was much more accurate and consistant with 180 than with 165... so I carried 180's.

180 grain--generally less easily deflected, penetrates better, is longer so it causes more damage when tumbling (lighter bullets tend to just turn sideways because they're so flat after expanding), and has less flash & bang than lighter, faster loads.

Thanks for the feedback. I was carrying hornadys custom defense, until I had a fail to fire after hitting it twice in the same gun and the next day loading it in to a different gun and hitting it again, to make sure it was not a problem with the gun, then emailing hornady to let them know and give them a lot number thinking they might want to check it out and never hearing back. I don't carry hornady anymore. Done ranting now sorry.

I have a bunch of 165 Gr HST's put back because I got a deal on them and would be confident using them. That said, 180 Gr is more comfortable (to me) to shoot, and that is what I have in my XD right now.

Just ordered some swampfox 175gr. Silver tips. The price was hard to beat ended up being cheaper then anything my local gander Mountain had.
