When purchasing a replacement stock for a Remington 700, is a SPS the same as an ADL?

    Hi all,

I just ended up with what I hope is an OUTSTANDING deal on a Remington 700 SPS Varmint in .17 Fireball.

I love the caliber... I like the action... I am NOT fond of the factory SPS varmint stock.

So, I am interested in a replacement stock for the SPS. I prefer a laminate stock like the finished stocks Boyd's carries. However, is the SPS stock the same as the ADL?

The Remington 700 Varmint that I bought is a 26" heavy barrel. Are all of the replacement stocks standard, then I just sand out the barrel channel?

Anyone else replace their Remington 700 Varmint stock that would care to share some tips or ppics?

I believe the ADL has a blind magazine, whereas the SPS has a hinged floorplate or a detachable magazine.

I know that at least SOME ADL's have had blind magazines. God knows what Remington calls "ADL" on a given day, though.

Newer SPS's have a hinged floorplate...if yours does you need an BDL/CDL style stock.

So an dimensionally, an ADL, BDL, and CDL stock are all the same except the floorplate?

    That's my understanding.

Note that all 700 actions aren't the same length.

I know there are short and long actions, and the stocks wouldn't be interchangeable. What I don't know is whether there are magnum and mini. I don't think so, but someone else will know better than I.

Thanks Bear. For someone reading this who didn't know about action lengths, that's a great comment.

My action is a Remington 17 Fireball, so I assume I will be looking for a BDL SA stock...
