Whick AK-74 rifle?

Hello all I have been looking at getting an AK-74 rifle (cheap ammo). I like the looks of the Lancaster Arms one on AIM.

There is also a Elk River Arms one at classicarms.us.

Which is the better rifle? They are both priced the same. The Lancaster looks nicer, but I will sacrifice a little looks for better quality.
 
you put more than 100 back into it converting it
but you have a new rifle set up the way you want
made at the izmash (sp?) factory where kalishnicov (again sp?) still works
 
Another vote for the Saiga-545.

It's made by, Izhmash, the same people and on the same machinery that makes AKs for the Russian military.

It comes with a chrome lined barrel. Which, is good to have when shooting all of the inexpensive surplus (corrosive) ammo.

Lots of the AK74 parts kits guns (ie. Tantals) do not come with chrome lined barrels, so you need to be deligent about cleaning it.
 
Quality will be a wash probably. Points I'd consider are:

1) AIM's Lancaster has a new US (stainless I believe) barrel - so far I've heard of no keyholing issues and stainless would be a little better than non with corrosive surplus.

2) Uses a NDS-2 receiver - which is quality and a copy of the Bulgarian's SLR-105 (AK-74), I prefer it to the Elk River.

3)If there's a problem AIM will make it right.

4) The Elk River might use the orginal chrome lined barrel - that would be the only plus I could think of of them.

5) A Saiga 5.45 is nice because it's all new parts but you will spend the difference on conversion parts and it still won't look like a traditional AK-74 unless you spend even more. Also, while the basic conversion is easy you have to have some mechanical ablities. You'll have to judge there.
 
The idea of getting a Saiga and having a brand new rifle is nice and all but some people would just like to get their AK and hit the range rather than spend more time and money getting it converted. :)

Stainless might be slightly better than non but is not as good as chrome lined for shooting corrosive ammo.
 
Check with Atlantic Firearms. They have quite a few AK-74's and are a great company to deal with.
 
FYI, the new Lancaster RR are being made with chrome moly barrels...no chrome lining, no SS.....just so you know.


If you clean it, it's fine....take a look at the barrels of all those Garands.
