the kid made a deal with a politian, and now more than a hundred years later the present new mexico governer will consider honoring the deal,as the story goes he was promised a full pardon for his testimony in a trial ........politicians and promises dont mix......we will see:cool:

Oh the noes! The merchants organization known as The House will be up in arms.

Rally Regulators, rally!

It's just like another case a few years ago. Jefferson Davis (first president of the CSA) had his US citizenship restored!

I've read a great deal about Jefferson Davis. If he were alive I believe he would turn down the offer to reinstate his citizenship.

He was one mean, spiteful SOB. He spent over 2 years in federal prison in handcuffs and leg irons and he was almost 60. He never, ever showed any remorse. Even though the South lost, he said he would not have changed a thing.

However....it's kinda loony restoring rights or pardoning dead folks. Dead people are notoriously ungrateful. They never say thanks.

....while still suffering from the occasional relapse of malaria from his youth, and chronic pain from a wound he suffered commanding the heroic stand of the Mississippi Rifles at Buena Vista. Yeah, Jeff Davis was pretty tough.

Jefferson Davis...
Some info that is interesting...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jefferson_Davis

Davis wrote The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government. In 1878, Davis was approached by the Pope in Rome, Pius IX, and was given a crown of thorns which was woven by the Pope's own hands. Pope Pius IX later informed Davis that this was his personal way of showing the Church's favoring and acceptance of the Confederacy instead of the Union.

Not a good comparison between Davis and Billy IMHO...Billy a two bit outlaw, and Davis a very principled man...

Why the hell pardon a guy that killed a guard to make his escape from a jail? I understand the guard was a decent guy just doing his job. The governor has picked a really stupid publicity stunt or else he owns part of a business that does Billy the Kid tours.

I have no idea of the governor's motivation in giving a pardon....
When you have zero political future left, you can suddenly cater to your every oddball whim.

kid pardon me

all you Leo's and haters of billy the kid, forget the fact that William Bonny was a deputy, and so called friend of pat garret, and that he lived in the most corrupt period in American history besides Chicago and Capone's hood, and he was promised a pardon for his testimony,as for his criminal status,he could have very well been railroaded, and blamed for crimes he did not commit,as many young cowboys, were ,lynched for bull-crap,white and black alike, desperado's,gypsies,Chinese, anyone who was out gunned,by the cattle barons, who were like the oil Barron's of today, and wildly corrupt, not the Cartwright's of TV land, and if there was a ponderosa as depicted ,it was the exception not the rule, back then people lived hard and died for a piece of land, and the people identified with the kid, cause the Lincoln county wars were about politics, money, power, corruption galore, who owned the press, whos voice was heard,it wasnt the kids.

Somewhere, someplace in America, there has always had corruption, I have noticed reading about history etc...

Billy should not be given a clean slate in my opinion... No, I am not a hater, just feel it is not right to do it...

Voting on it would be a good idea, not allow one person to make the decision, the relatives of the ones killed should be consulted, and maybe vote:D

Regards

One of the guards killed by Billy The Kid was named Olinger. Olinger took great pride in hassling his charges, including BTK.

If Billy the Kid didn't have reason enough to free himself, Olinger gave him another reason by continually harassing him. A woman who had seen Olinger guarding Billy was interviewed more than 50 years after the fact (see They 'Knew' Billy the Kid: Interviews with Old-time New Mexicans, edited by Robert F. Kadlec). She said of the guard: 'He was a big burly fellow, and every one that I ever heard speak of him said he was mean and overbearing, and I know that he tantalized Billy while guarding him, for he invited me to the hanging just a few days before he was killed. Even after he was killed I never heard any one say a single nice thing about him.' Garrett himself said that Olinger and Billy the Kid had a 'reciprocal hatred.' Olinger and the Kid had supported opposing factions during the Lincoln County War, and Olinger had killed Billy's friend John Jones in August 1879.

I'm pretty sure this post is making reference to J.W. Bell, not Olinger. From everything I can find, Bob Olinger was as bad or worse than the Kid. Olinger's own mother is credited with calling him a killer from the cradle and stated, "If there's a hell, then he is there." Sounds like a great guy huh?

I don't really care if they pardon him one way or the other.

I dunno but it won't change a thing and I honestly think if they are gonna waste time like this then their salaries could go to people on unemployment that can't find jobs. At least then all they are wasting is time.

billy got shafted

What part of the word DEAL do people not understand?THE LIARS of today are the same bunch as the politicians of old that are after your right to keep and bear arms, and whats that jailer mad about anyways billy made him famous.:D

The Earps and their story, at the time numerous papers in town political situation at its finest... Where the later writers got the info they did along with stories of the last survivors and their memories :D

Billy got what he gave, should have been sooner :what:

Wonder how the gang members and killers will be remembered that are making the news today...

Movie "Tombstone" used the red kerchief (red or blue were available then) as a sign the cowboys were gang members:uhoh: Hmmm Crips and Bloods come to mind:evil:

One thing to always remember about history, it is written by the winner.
