What about Phaser safety?

So, I was watching a couple of episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and I'm always noticing all of the characters violating Gun safety rules (with phasers and disrupters of course). I'm always seeing them tossing working phasers to each other, handing a disrupter to someone else with its muzzle pointed directly at someone's chest. The least they could do is impliment a little Phaser safety. Just to make the show a bit more realistic.

Just for the record, I didn't create that image. I saw it several months ago and when this thread started I remembered it and found it with a google search.

What I want to know is how they ever hit anything with those Phasers since there were no sights and they were always point shooting.

You'll notice that the typical phaser blast is quite long in duration - on the order of several seconds. This gives the operator plenty of time to correct his aim.

Interestingly, males seem to be particularly good at this technique (which probably explains why female Starfleet members are almost never shown in pitched phaser battles). However, decorum dictates that the reasons for this gender-related skill shall forever remain beyond the scope of discussion...

Actually as a trekkie(not the PC trekkor) and a bigger fan of "trek technology theory" the phaser itself has a semi-inteligent semi-auto-aiming feature. IT can acquire targets. There is some intuitive use when shooting the jackass over the shoulder of a friend, and is part of the training, but basically if you are pointing it towards the intended target the idea is the phaser acquires the target, and automatically adjusts the aiming of the output of the phased energy beam. Yeah I know, the idea is nice, when there is only one person in front of you but when there are several the phaser could get "confused" as to who in particular to shoot.

Which I suppose is where the training comes in. Remember Guinan had to come DOWN to Worf's level, and then proceded to soundly open up a can on him. Of course she's had hundreds of years of shooting phasers. Afterall she did trade insults and anecdotes with Mark Twain(A.K.A. Samuel Clemens).

Rev. Michael

P.S.
HAHAHAHAHA Sad part is from the "tech manuals" that is the basic gist of how phasers work so well in point shooting. Plus if you've watched all the episodes as I have(got almost all on DVD) this has been made canon by explanations throughout various episodes. Enterprise phase pistols are much different however and have no auto-aim or target aquisition features so anyones guess is as good as mine, but keep in mind there are some people out there who are EXTREMELY good at point shooting and can do bullseye matches like that, but couldn't use sites to save their lives.

That image is soooo saved...

At least with the new rifles introduced First Contact/Deep Space Nine they added a danged sight onto 'em.

And look at this:

A whole room full of actual trigger discipline.

"Most of the bravos in town chop into their targets with the beam already hot. You can stop them (with 1911 repro) if you have a quick wrist."

"He had had to swing the beam sideways as the horse shied instead of pinpointing the (snake's) head. No point taking it back for the skin, they would just ask him why he didn't use a garden hose."

Heinlein (more or less on verbatim quotes)

Any of the Trekkies on the forum wanna found the Federation Phaser Association?

I wouldn't mind that TR-116 gun from DS9.

Hey, guys, remember...

It's Hollywierd, not Reality. When they get it--weapons use in this instance--right, IF they get it right, it's by accident, not by design. All they have to do is look good. The scriptwriters, cameramen, and film editors will take care of the rest.

Now mind you, I happen to like Star Trek 2nd Gen, and DS9, AND Voyager, not to mention all the Star Wars movies. BUT--I don't take them "real world" seriously, and certainly don't use them for weapons training films.

Fun, but ultimately no different than every other "Hollywood Gun Safety" discussion we've had.
