Female Cop Re: Ft. Hood Is "Firearms Expert"

The female police officer who shot the suspect in the Ft. Hood shootings is regarded as a firearms expert according to the attached NY Times article.

She was also shot 3 times during the attempt to bring the shooter down.

Big bad guy, small good girl

When you look at photos of the bad guy and then look at photos of the lady cop who took him down, it seems a pretty safe bet that the bad guy outweighed the cop by at least two-to-one. It's a good thing she had the gun as an equalizer, even though, from what the article says, she handles herself pretty good without one!

My point? Those who say the world would be better without guns forget that the small, weak, old, and infirm would be at the mercy of the young and powerful... as they are now in once-Great Britain.

Good on her.

One word for the police officer: Awesome.

I wish every cop were like her.

She developed a love of shooting as a young girl, her grandmother Monirie Metz said. She killed her first deer when she was 11 on a hunting trip with her grandfather.
Who ever taught her to shoot and carry herself in such a manor deserves a lot of credit.

Good read, I'm glad she was there.

There were many heroes involved. The cop who took fire putting him down, the medics who ran into gunfire to help wounded, the soldier outside in his pickup who ran in, and transported four wounded to the ER. ALL deserve commendations.

An honor to see her wear the uniform, embodying all that is good. To quote a much overused cliche, yet so perfect in this situation, "YOU GO GIRL". My hat is off and I salute her.

I'm not knowledgeable on how to do this, but if anyone on THR wants to start a "Hero Appreciation Fund" for Munley and/or the others, I'm in. Might be a nice gesture from THR.

That cop possesses the eye of the tiger. One definite hero and the right one to show up first on the scene. She was an angel sent.
Former Army I am deeply touched helping hands for those involved to help the wounded on site. Further lives were saved.

I have long stated the when it concerns the thin blue line They serve our country and deserve credit where credit is due.

It sounds like all 4 of her shots hit, all while she was taking hits.........

That's a lot of guts she has......stayed in the fight and made it count.

This story illustrates 2 points very clearly for me. First, in situations like this having someone that can fight back is the only solution to the problem. Second, though this cop did an amazing job, the bad guy still had 5 whole minutes of uninterrupted havoc to perpetrate.

If there is anything we can take from this is that we can all use a little more training, and trained concealed carry permit holders are needed ever more frequently these days. Just curious, but are soldiers not allowed to carry concealed on military bases?

Absolutely not!
Soldiers are only allowed to have issued weapons, and even then only for training.

Please forgive me if this comment is out of order, but it is how I feel about this young lady. If the expression "brass balls" would be an appropriate comment for a female officer, I would certainly say she has them. As one who has served, she has my complete repect and my sincere thanks. God bless her and I pray for her speedy recovery.

I have a couple of customers that have me send bullets to fort hood. So do they have to leave the base in order to carry a personal weapon? I have written emails asking if they are okay, but none have responded as of today.

^^^ - when you are on post, this.

Don't forget, when you enlist or get commissioned (or get a warrant, to complete the list), you're no longer a civilian and you now fall under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). This basically means that your @$$ is the military's, and you enjoy none of the rights and privileges that civilians do -- DoD and the base commander set the policy.

That means if your base commander sets policy that forbids you to CCW off base or off post (even if it is otherwise legal), you are expected to comply (essentially following an order). If you're caught, you may not face legal ramifications in the civilian court system, but you can expect judicial proceedings in military court for violating base policy, insubordination, etc., and can expect punishment up to and including dishonorable discharge and/or time in the brig. (I'm actually having this discussion right now with a friend, who as a USCGR LTJG is legally covered under LEOSA to CCW nationwide, but is trying to figure out what his command's policy is on carrying off duty. And oh yeah, he's a lawyer in his civilian life.)

As far as the policy for forbidding weapons on base/post, I need to figure out why that came about. My guess (and I've been looking, but can't find a cite) is that it relates to the Posse Comitatus Act and DoD leadership wanting to demonstrate that it truly was not out to use the military for civilian law enforcement purposes, hence forbidding weapons.

Back on topic: she's a heckuva cop. I wonder if the Army awards Distinguished Service Crosses to civilians...?

Awesome police work... it is refreshing to see an officer dive in and take immediate action. Seems like most first responders to active shooter calls these days just sit around and wait for SWAT to arrive.
This gal is a true hero... and most guys out there could learn a few things from her actions. I hope she makes a speedy and full recovery.

I'm not trying to diminish this girl's heroism, but now it seems that the terrorist had been shot and neutralized by another officer, Senior Sgt. Mark Todd.
See the article in Dept of Defense news:

"Hasan reportedly started firing on Todd and Munley, who took cover behind a vehicle. Munley left her cover to pursue the shooter and Todd followed around the other side of the building, where the major was hiding. When Todd looked around the corner of the building, he saw Munley on the ground. She had been shot.

Hasan was hiding behind a light post and firing at people who were fleeing the scene. Todd recalls firing five shots at Hasan. The major fell. Todd then confiscated Hasan’s weapons and cuffed him. The entire exchange between Todd and the gunman lasted less than 45 seconds. "

I have nothing but praise for Office Munley, but the credit for shooting the jihadist belongs with Senior Sgt. Mark Todd.

Huh? What are you talking about?

No one is attempting to disarm police or military lol. Their guns are quite safe.

“It was an amazing and an aggressive performance by this police officer,” General Cone told The Associated Press.
And for that she should be commended by either the Department of the Army or the Joint Chiefs.
