For home defense, I choose both. For CCW, the flashlight is my choice.

The first time I had to clear a camper and had both of my hands full was also the last time. Not only did I obtain a weapon light, I bought a new gun to mount it on as the old one did not have a rail - it was that important.
I could conjure up several scenarios where you would need a free hand, but you all have imaginations so I won't bother. It all boils down to one question - if I need a free hand, do I want to drop my light to retain my gun? I don't. But hey, that's just what I do. I only average about one house clearing per work day so I probably don't qualify as a professional. Edit: Oh, I also have a Surefire G2 with a Malkoff 200 lumen head that I use when I'm not on point. |

Combat Rings
I don't really have as much experience as everyone here, but I found all the info everyone provided to be really beneficial and interesting. The only thing I haven't seen mentioned is Graham's Combat rings, which are fairly new. Any thoughts?

I do both. I have my maglite next to the bed with my 9mm. None of my pistols ore accessory friendly. And I also have my cut down Mossy with pistol grip(legal length) with an attached led lite.
I had to sweep my house once. Came home with the family after an evening out and the front door was open. It was still somewhat light out so I didnt' need a light, but it could have helped. Also just last week there was a thump in the back yard right out side our bedroom window. I grabed my Mossy w/lite and cleared the yard, with intermitant flashes of the light. Worked perfect. It was just a cat by the way. It was odd, because the neighborhood has been cat free for almost a year. |

I used a Maglite as a constant friend back in my old SO days...but I do really like the idea of a mounted light, and just never really have put a great deal of thought into it. Here's a few questions:
1) Light the Glock or light the 870 ( I CC the Glock) 2) Flourescent light, or traditional light ( Mini Mag) 3) Why not just keep doing with my Maglite, what I have been doing for the last 20 years ? ( It is tuff to sweep a yard with a Maglite and an 870, but it can be done- I can do it good with a Glock though) 4) Do I really need to be that concerned about it, since I live in a town with 4 red lights, and I have a 70lb American bulldog in the back yard that is a light sleeper? Ok, ok, ok...I am playing a little with that last remark.
