Shot my 642 for the first time tonight. Was using 125 grain Winchester +P JHP rounds. Holy crap it beat my hand up. I'm not planning on using that round on a regular basis for practice.

I've been carrying it around the house and I really think IWB at about 2:30 will be perfect for me. I'll probably pick up a Mika pocket holster at some point so I have that option, but with my normal work attire (tucked in dress shirt and slacks) I can't conceal very well in a pocket. A tuckable IWB holster should do the trick.

Thanks to you well wishers. I have a Dr. appt. tomorrow and will know a lot more. Otherwise getting a little antsy to start rehab.

First exercise willl be a trip to the range. I still have yet to fire my christmas gifts a .22LR conversion kit for my Kimbers and the ever elusive Marlin 1894c Stainless.

I just noticed that me cylinder realease is loose. I tightened the screw and it is better now. Is this a bad thing? It is only 2 weeks old why did it get loose already?

Where's the best place to buy Crimson Trace grips? Couple places that came up when I googled it had 405's listed for just under 200, but they didn't seem the most trustworthy.

There are several different types of crimson trace grips that are available. Does anyone know which one is approximately the same size as the stock grips on the 642. I think that I may want to buy a set of CS grips, but I want to still be able to keep the gun in my front pocket.

Hey 41, there are three types of grips offered by CT for J frames. The one most closely resembling the original boot grips are the 105, which is a basic polymer boot grip that does not cover the back strap. The 305's are the large ones that not only cover the back strap but also add a little length to the grip. I think the 405's are the best overall design, which adds a rubber cushion to the back strap but does not add additional length, making it still possible to pocket carry. The only downside to the 405's is the inclusion of rubber, which has a tendency to stick to clothing although this shouldn't really matter if you're pocket carrying. Hope that helps.

Since we're on topic, has anyone had any experience with the offerings by Lasermax? The shop that had the CT display was also displaying these but the unit must have been out of batteries because it wasn't working. Without sampling the laser I can already say that I prefer the activation of the CTs FAR more.

Will Ballistol hurt the finish of my 642?

Any cleaners safe for the 642?

I guess ammonia is not recommended but I am having a hard time finding ammonia free gun cleaner that is highly rated.

Do many modern cleaners have ammonia in them any more? Seems like amongst the batch I have collected over the last 5 years, none of it does.

On the exterior I think S&W recommends Hoppes Elite which I have used frequently on the exterior of my 642. I have also wiped down with Rem Oil with no negatives. I'll have to go see what other cleaners I have used tomorrow.

I guess this would be the definitive answer. It would only make sense. S&W Products.

DA, this has been a very mild year up this far north.
We had 2.5 nor'easters, and have had snow on the ground since winter solstice,
but we've had only 1 bout of below zero (-15 two nights).

Further south was way worse. NYC set a record for snow.
There's a reason for that that I could explain, but not here.

But I digress.

It's really great to see this .38 spl +p snub thread keep going.

Takes a lickin', but keeps on tickin', or something like that.

Can't wait to have my x42 shipped up here where winter is king.

New member of the cult here!

Picked up my 642 a few hours ago. Yesterday I called up the shop I buy from and was about to settle for a gun with a lock that they had in stock. But when I got there today, to my surprise, they had gotten a shipment in of -1 pistols in so I snatched one up!

$369+tx seemed like a fair deal for one I could walk with. I settled on the 642 because I wanted to find a summer-carry alternative to my Glock 26 when clothing warrants a smaller piece. Holster is getting ordered tonight. Looks like I have some reading to do!

I ordered my second "Theis Custom"... He is a member on Glocktalk who makes a kydex/leather IWB hybrid (Crossbreed knock-off). I have one for my Glock26 and carry it 12+ hours a day. Amazing little holsters that make almost any pistol disappear and they're super comfy...

My 642 trigger has improved considerably over the last couple years with X,000 dry fires. Still, recently I've been contemplating a trigger job for further improvement either by the PC or a recommended gunsmith. After research (much here) I see the consensus is: don't do it, the liability is not worth the risk and when the SHTF, you don't need it anyway. I am good with that decision but thought I'd just get confirmation. I am not trying to lighten the pull necessarily but more likely smooth it further. (And no, I am not interested in switching to an LCR)
