The NRA isn't perfect, and not all gun owners even agree on all gun issues.

That being said, where do you think our gun rights would be if the NRA didn't exist?

Where do you think our gun rights would be if the majority of gun owners spent $20 - $35 bucks a year on NRA memberships (what power the NRA would have if it had 40 million members instead of 4 million?

Get off the bitch wagon and start helping the rest of us haul your butt around.

I like my pistol. I like my black rifle. I'm one "NRA compromise" away from losing my right to either or both of those. If you don't believe it, ask the full auto guys. The NRA threw them under the bus in 86 in the interest of "compromise", for what?

You can't get a full auto firearm? The law requiring a tax stamp passed in the 1930's, that's still the law. But, back in the 1930's, there weren't quite as many full auto firearms made, were there?

Maybe you're too young to remember the 1960's. I do. The attitude of the American public at that time was that NOBODY had a need for a pistol, the ONLY people who used pistols were criminals. Hell, polls of the American public showed near 70% of the country thought pistols should be banned. Then Bobby Kennedy was killed with one, and people were enraged, they wanted them GONE FOREVER!

Now, I love the fun of shooting a full auto firearm the same as anyone does, but is it anywhere near as practical as a pistol for use by the typical gun owner? I don't think so. The number of rounds fired in Vietnam was way more than that used in WW-II.

Some people will use any BS to justify not supporting the NRA. Send your cash to the GOA, be my guest. I don't see a group that preaches the "all or nothing" stance, yet can't show any effect for their efforts as worthwhile. I work pretty hard for my cash, I'll opt for the big dog rather than the yipping puppy.

So, you don't have to worry about the screw-ups of the government to prevent you from having a transfer when you go to buy a gun. I'd give money to not have to go through the worry of a bunch of idiots our government hires deciding that today is the day they want to delay my gun transfer. They might decide someone I've stood in line at the coffee shop is a terrorist, and I suddenly got on a "no-buy" list.

I've had two - yup - two full paid life memberships which disappeared after a time lie gorillas in the mist and they would start sending me dues notices. The second time this happened, I didn't even bother to argue with them - won't be a third!

For the most part I support the NRA but no longer feel like adopting them as a dependent.

That is about the size of it for me as some others. I will continue to renew every few years. They get more money that way any how. I have heard they frequently pester the lifetime members for contributions. I give as I am able.

Out of curiosity, anyone know if you take this deal if you get a credit for time already paid? I'm good through 2013, and might be able to get the difference together before the 15th with money I have un-allocated, if I get the credit...but...with over $400 in textbooks needing to be bought...probably can't quite manage the full $300 in time.

I took advantage of this offer 3 years ago, and it showed up 3 days after I paid for a 5 year...I just signed up and figured even at $450 for a lifetime, I'm still money ahead, plus the NRA made a little more, so win win...

As far as the NRA pestering life timers for more money...if you don't want to send more money, don't...They get the picture eventually, and leave you alone, trust me...I know, at least they did with me.

I will listen to any reasonable argument, and I stand ready to be corrected. I'll give you a very brief (reader's digest version, in the interest of brevity) summary of some of the facts, and you can tell me where I'm wrong .

FOPA 86 eased some restrictions on the interstate purchase of guns, and added the "safe passage" clause whereby if the gun was legal in your state of origin, and your state of destination, you could travel with it through a state where it is not legal, if it's reasonably secured (in trunk/unloaded/not readily accessible/etc). The Hughes Amendment was a poison pill intended to kill the bill, it closed the registry, effectively banning civilian ownership of new full auto firearms.
This bill passed, without a fight from the NRA.

It is sound strategy to unite all gun owners, be they rifle/shotgun hunters, handgunners, owners of *EBR's*, the idea being that, united, we can fight the creeping incrementalism of the anti brigade. Otherwise, they'll take the EBR's today, the handguns tomorrow, and all firearms a week from Tuesday. Where was that unity when FA was traded away?

When FOPA was poisoned with the Hughes Amendment, it went from being a good thing, to a bad thing. This would have been a good time to start fighting.

I have a small variety of firearms, a rifle, a shotgun, a hand gun, and an AR, and I enjoy them all. I do, honestly, fear that the next time a piece of gun control legislation comes around, they won't fight it, but will compromise, and I'll have to give up the AR, or the handgun, because the NRA supported a bill that gave up rights to that particular type of firearm in exchange for something else. I don't think I'm being unreasonable to fear that this might happen. There is precedent for it, it HAS HAPPENED before. 1986.

If there is still one of those spots open, I would be game. No, I have not been a member of this -- or other gun related forums -- for many years. In fact, I bought my first gun last year. And I do not think NRA is a perfect organization. But I like to put my money where my mouth is: if I want to tell them a piece of my mind, instead of sitting in a corner whining I want to start the letter by saying "I am life member #xxx" just like when I feel I need to write to a politician I begin with "I am a registered independent voter."

Been a Lifer for two years now (I upgraded during the Holidays as well for $500--that's when they seem to offer it at significantly discounted prices). I look at the Second Amendment not only as something being utterly woven into the very fabric of our nation's cultural history near and dear to the hearts of our Founding Fathers, but a right of which is under constant assault rendering it virtually obligatory for gun owners to join the cause and laboriously fight to uphold the Second Amendment verbatim.
