Identity and Date of Manufacture of S&W Revolvers

I recently had a local dealer order a Model 60 (assuming it would be a new .357). Although, what showed up was a new 60-4. Seems to be a pretty cool piece and I will likely be keeping it. He is not sure how it got mixed up.

I have seen alot of mixed information on when it was produced and how many were made.

The Standard Catalog of S&W states that the Model 60-4 Chiefs Special Stainless Target began production 1990. It was replaced by the .357 Magnum Model 60-10 Chiefs Special Stainless Target & the Model 60-13 .38 Special Chiefs Special Stainless Target in 1996. These in turn were replaced by the .357 60-15 & .38 60-17 in 2001.

The product code for a 1990 to 1995 target model should be 102298. Check your box to see if this matches.

Guns in the serial range BFWxxxx shipped in February 1991, as this was within the production range for your gun I'm inclined to believe it was manufactured in late 1990 or early 1991. As to why it was not shipped till now? I've no idea.

It's serial number is 2K62924.

Nope. The Model 67 shared its serial range with the Model 14, 15, 18, 19 & 66. The range is broken into several sectors over the years, with several sub ranges being used consecutively. Yours falls into the range 2K55997 to 2K99999 for that year. Whether that range was reserved only for the Model 67 I don't know.
The Model 67 no dash was produced from 1972 to 1977. I've no clue as to the total number.

Hello All,

I recently purchased a 19-3 and am curious as to its particulars.

a) caliber
b) bbl length (from cylinder to muzzle)
c) grips shape (round or square)
d) number of shots/cylinder bores
e) type of sights.
f) serial number, and if there is a letter in front of or anywhere near the s/n on the bottom of the grip
g) Model number if it is under the crane.
That number, if it is the s/n, should come from the butt of the grip (or under the barrel or face of the cylinder).

I picked up one last week that I like a lot...it is a very sweet shooter.

Chambered for 38 S&W Special
5 screw
4 lines of text on right side of frame ahead of the trigger guard.
6 shot
6 inch barrel
Adjustable sights, target hammer & trigger
Serial number on butt and bottom of barrel 1410XX with a K prefix

I intend to use the gun for informal target shooting, plinking and perhaps a bit of small game hunting. It is certainly accurate enough.

I'm guessing early '50's ?

I would expect it to be very accurate - it was S&Ws premium target revolver of the time, intended to be used as part of a set with the .22lr K22 & .32 S&W Long K32 Target Masterpieces at the Camp Perry national shooting competitions.
I wish you luck with it both on the range and in the field.

Your Model 31-1 .32 Regulation Police was manufactured between 1972 & 1976 in the serial range H600001 to H99999. My guesstimate in 1976, based on average production of roughly 12500 guns per year over that decade.
The -1 refers to the gun being built on the J frame. The early Regulation Police used the smaller I & improved I frames.

The Model 58 .41 Magnum Military & Police was produced from 1964 to 1977. Built on the large square butt N frame, it should have an S or a N prefix to the serial number. Your friend may have to remove the grips to see the serial number, it is sometimes, but not always, duplicated on the frame under the cylinder yoke.
If the serial number is S257010 the it was manufactured in late 1964 or 1965 and is part of the original production run.
I can't give you an idea of current value. In 2006 the Standard catalog of S&W gave a value of $450 in very good condition. I suggest you check out completed sales on online auction sites such as gunbroker & gunsamerica to get a feel for current values.
