The Standard Catalog of S&W buy Supica & Nahas has an appendix listing serial numbers and date ranges. In addition for a $50 fee S&W will research the shipping history of a firearm. Often members will post the dates they get back from S&W. I note these down when I can and use them to give a closer date.

Your Model 13-3 .357 Magnum Military & Police Heavy Barrel was manufactured in 1982.

The Model 36-1 Chiefs Special 3 inch Heavy Barrel was introduced in 1967. The serial number should be greater than 400000 or have a J prefix, such as J111111. Just to confuse things, there was also a floating J such as 222J22.
It looks like you have quoted an assembly number from under the crane. The serial number is sometimes duplicated under the crane, but is always found on the bottom of the grip frame. This may be covered by the grips, if so you will need to take them off to see the serial number.
Get back to me with the correct number and I'll give you a year.

I just ran across an old revolver with the following characteristics:

Caliber: 38 Special
Cylinder: 6 shot
Barrel: 5 inches
grip: oval wood
Sights: Fixed
Frame: 5 screw (including grip screw)
Mfg: "Made in Spain" stamped on right side rear of frame
Barrel Stamp (left side): "For 38 special and US service CTG"
Cylinder release: Round button that swivels
Butt Serial #: 45300
Model #: none
Finish: blue is completely gone

No other marking or numbers on gun

Condition: "Poor to junk" condition. Unless worth refurbishing I will likely use as a wall mounted display depending on what my research uncovers.

Question: How old? Any historical significance or worth?

1910 to 1930 or there about.
Spanish pot metal or cast iron gun most likely. These were common copies of the S&W design, hence Marcas Registradas being stamped on S&Ws after WWII.
Do not fire, it may be unsafe. I would eactivate so no one else can fire it.
No value at all.

Your .38 Combat Masterpiece Stainless should have been manufactured in 1978, but the switch to the Model 67-1 occurred in 1977. My guess is old parts were used up in making your gun or it was incorrectly stamped. It is a stainless steel variant of the K frame Model 15.

I have aquired two S&W revolvers from family members:
1. 22/32 - 22 cal., round grip, 6 shot blue in finish, adjustable rear sight #827X
2. 38 special - .38 cal., round grip, 5 shot, chrome, fixed rear sight # 456JXX

Not sure of barrel lenghts but hopefully the picture will help.

The .38 special is nickel finish. It is either a Model 36 Chiefs Special or a Model 37 Chiefs Special Airweight. The barrel will be marked Airweight if a model 37.
Either way, that gun was manufactured in 1971 or 1972. If I had to guess I would say late 1971.
The Model of 1953 .22/32 Kit gun dates to 1954 or early 1955.

You are correct - nickel finish. And again after further infestigation it does say Mod 36 on it. The 38 has all kinds of other markings on it. What is the 22/32 kit gun? What does teh 32 stand for?

.22/32 refers to a .22 caliber chambering using a .32 caliber frame.
The .22/32 Kit Gun was originally built on the small I frame used for the .32 Regulation Police and .32 Hand Ejector models. In 1961 the I frame was deleted and the small frame .22 & .32 caliber models migrated to the .38 special sized J frame used for the Model 36.
Kit Gun refers to a gun you would throw in a Kit Bag. These days it might be called a tackle box gun, a tool to take when fishing, camping, etc.

The other markings are known as assembly numbers or process numbers, they are used to track parts in the factory and have no meaning after the gun is completed.

As for price, I can't help[ you as I am in Australia and I don't follow current prices in the USA. Check completed sales on gunbroker or armsamerica to get an idea of the going rate.
