Arrow 2014-Q2 Rimfire Match: Long Range Challenge

Welcome to a special edition of the Rimfire Match, the Long Range Challenge! This match is for the months of April/May/June 2014! This match is open to any and every 22 caliber (as well as 17 and 20 caliber) rimfire rifle including the perennial favorite .22LR, as well as the .22Short, .22Long, .22 Mag., .17HM2, .17HMR, .17WSM, and 5mm Rem RF Mag (as well as any oddball rimfires that you might have). This match is meant to be challenging and educational, but most of all FUN. Hopefully it will get you out to the range and shooting your rifle. If you have one handy, make sure an bring a friend too.

There are Two Optics Divisions:
->Iron sights and non-magnified optics and red dots. Shot at 100yds.
->Scopes and other magnified sighting devices. Shot at 200yds.

*Note that the distances has been increased for this special long range challenge. If you have difficulty achieving the prescribed distance you may shoot a properly scaled target (half the distance would equate to a scale of 1:2 or 50% dimensions, or four per page {not two}) at the maximum distance available at your range, but you must indicate that the distance was modified (though you are still eligible to make the leaderboard and no penalties will be suffered). That said, if you have access to the prescribed range(s) please shoot as indicated.

There are Two Rifle Classes:
->Target Class: unlimited class primarily dedicated to target rifles but also includes any rifles that do not meet the prerequisites for the sporting division (highly modified rifles, rests, target sights, sub-.20cal. chamberings, high magnification optics- over 10x [in the appropriate division] may be used)
->Sporting Class: limited class for sporting rifles used in "field conditions" (Includes All Non-Target Class Autoloaders, Bolt Actions, Single Shots, Pumps, & Lever Rifles chambered for any rimfire cartridge .20cal./5mm and larger)

Both classes can be shot from any position. Rests/Sandbags/bipods are permitted in the Target Class only. Shooting stick(s) are now permitted for both divisions (either crossed or walking stick style). Use of a sling is encouraged.

100 Yd. (Irons) Target: See image attached below*. Scale to "fit to page" on standard 8.5x11in. paper. The objective is to fire three (3) shots at the groundhog target. The target is scored as exactly as marked and requires only cutting the line to be awarded the higher value (note that all hits outside of the black "1-ring" are to be recorded as a -3), for a maximum available score of 60pts. Take note of the special LR distance!

200 Yd. (Optics) Target: Same as above. Take note of the special LR distance!

If you enjoyed this match (or are glutton for punishment, as the case may be) and want a bit more challenge, or just compare your rimfires to their larger cousins, check out the concurrent Centerfire Match (for a limited time only...unless participation increases).

When you are satisfied you've done your best post/attach (or shoot me a PM) a photo or scan of your target with as much of the following information as possible: Forum name (or name you want posted in the results), Rifle, make, model, vintage (if known), Sights/Optics (with magnification if applicable), Ammo, Position, Distance, Conditions (in/outdoors, wind, temperature...). Multiple submissions are allowed (in same or different division/class with same or different rifles).

Self-scoring is encouraged and appreciated; all submissions due before June 31st.

Nice. I'll try it in the next few weeks. Hopefully I'll have one rifle in each class. My 10/22 carbine in the sporter class and my cz452 in the target class.

Thanks for dropping by, alfon99...be sure to check out the concurrent centerfire match (see the link in my signature line for details) if you want to give that new VZ.58 a workout as well!

Just ran the new 10/22LVT through a Silohette course last week out to 100yds. Picked up a new Redfield Revenge 6x18x44 today so as soon as it's mounted and sighted I'll give it a try

Here's my first attempt. Savage 93r17 @200yds. Calling it a 25 as the two shots on the right are cutting the line ever so slightly.

Well done, Texas4x4hoe! That said, I think your score should be 40, not 25 (you only need to break the line to attain the higher value).

Ok cool. I missed that. I was going by the scoring rules on the target.

I finally shot one.

I got the CM-2 out and shot this at 100 yards for a score of 45. This was my first (and best) of four targets. SK Std+, off of bags, dual aperture sight, and negligible wind.

So...question..

If my range only has 25 yards (iron sights) I would make that scale 16 per page ?

You got it; each dimension would need to be 25% of the original size so four (4) across and four (4) down...16 per page will fit.

Kansas Critter II

Another nice evening to shoot the RF challenge but could only manage a '35' -

Ruger 10-22 / BSA 12x / Adams & Bennett barrel / 100 yd. / Wolf Target ammo

Well done, 22BR!

P.S: Don't discount yourself...100yds (particularly with the target size reduced) with a .22LR is a lot more difficult than that .22BR laser of your's.

Sorry for being so slow to close this one out...I've been keeping busy with some mission-work as of late and was just too tired to get it done last night.

Here's the results:

Non-Magnified/Target:
1st: Red Tornado - 45pts.

Magnified/Target:
1st: Texas4x4Hoe - 40pts.
2nd: 22BR - 35pts.

I'm unsure how to proceed with the matches moving forward...the ammunition shortage has been taking it's toll, should be keep on going or go on hiatus until things improve?

I'll participate in the centerfire again. Rimfire is still not an option for me, though our local store had more than I'd seen in a while last week, but not what I needed. I think you should at least do this next quarter for both though. It is prime shooting season, for me anyway.

I beat you to it, both are already posted (see sig. line for links)...just wondering what we're going to do in the future (if the trend continues, that is).

In other news I will be missing one match next year (Q2-2015) due to a 5-6mo. extended trip where I will have very limited internet access (if any at all). I'm going to try to have the match ready to post before I depart and upload it via phone, but I'm not certain how well that will work or if I will have enough bandwidth to complete the mission. If I remember correctly FlyinBryan (one of the folks that helped start the match years ago) said he would cover for me (though that was a couple of years back, when the trip was cancelled/delayed), so hopefully we can roll with no interruptions in my absence. If all else fails I might have it up before I depart and keep it locked (courtesy of my buddy Art Eatman's admin privileges) until opening day...I can always count on him to get things done for me.
