Arrow 2014-Q3 Centerfire Match:

Welcome to the Centerfire Match for the third quarter of 2014 (July-September)! This match is open to any centerfire rifle. This match is meant to be challenging and educational, but most of all FUN. Hopefully it will get you out to the range and shooting your rifle. If you have one handy, make sure an bring a friend too.

->Iron sights and non-magnified optics and red dots. Shot at 25yds.
->Scopes and other magnified sighting devices. Shot at 100yds.

*Please take note that the distance has returned to the standard range for the match.

There are Two Rifle Classes in the magnified division (only one for the non-magnified division):
->Target Rifles (purpose-built target rifles, modified rifles, rests, heavy rifles (over 10lbs), high magnification optics- over 10x may be used).
->Sporting Rifles (Includes All Non-Target Class Autoloaders, Bolt Actions, Single Shots, Pumps, & Lever Rifles). Rests/sandbags/bipods are not permitted in this class, but shooting sticks (either the crossed or walking stick variety) are allowed. Use of a sling is encouraged. Shoots may be taken from any position. Rests/Sandbags/bipods are not permitted in this class.

25 Yd. (Irons) Target: See image attached below*. Scale to "fit to page" on standard 8.5x11in. paper. The objective is to fire one (1) shot at each bullseye target. The target is scored as marked with the center dot being worth 10pts (must be completely obliterated). Requires only cutting the line to be awarded the higher value (note that all hits outside of the 1-ring are to be recorded as a 0, no points are deducted), for a maximum available score of 170pts.

100 Yd. (Optics) Target: Same as above.

*Note that shooting at a distance shorter than prescribed is possible for those that do not have access to a facility with enough range. Just scale the target properly (half the distance would equal a 50% target, or four per page) and indicate the distance that you shot at and you will not be disqualified.

When you are satisfied you've done your best post/attach (or shoot me a PM) a photo or scan of your target with as much of the following information as possible: Forum name (or name you want posted in the results), Rifle, make, model, vintage (if known), Sights/Optics (with magnification if applicable), Ammo (or load, if you care to divulge your secret recipe), Position, Distance, Conditions (in/outdoors, wind, temperature...). Multiple submissions are allowed (in same or different class with same or different rifles).

Self-scoring is encouraged and appreciated. All submissions due before September 31st.

Wowsers, that's a tough one. I only had enough rounds loaded for on target full. I'm not sure if I scored it right. A few rounds strayed from their intended targets. I fired one at each bull. I noted the shots that were not intended for a target with circle and arrow. If the stray shot counts against my other bull then my score would be lower.

As I counted I scored 89. Definitely left some room for improvement, but I wanted to get a target out here for others to beat!

Scoped target class. 100 yards. It was a very nice 75 degrees with a 3-5 mph wind.
Rock River Varmint AR15, 5.56, with a Mueller 8-32x scope. Shot prone with a bipod and small rear field bag.

A beautiful morning to be out shooting. My 8 year old daughter wanted to join me this morning and spent some time on a left over target from last month. She was shooting a Savage Rascal at about 20 yards from a bag rest. I think she did a great job!

Happy Independence Day!!!

It's a tough one, Gregaw (hence not deducting points, per the instructions, for strays...we can always resort to using them in case of a tie), but I think you did well. Thank you for getting us started, and happy Independence Day to you as well!

Started a small manufacturing business for some mechanical ham radio, morse code key parts and haven't had much time for shooting lately.

I DID pick up a new .223 bolt gun though, a Howa 1500 with a 24" bull barrel - 1:12 twist so it don't like anything much over 55 grain bullets.

Local friend of mine put a fly in my ear about .22 caliber lead bullets though and I picked up a 55 grain .225" Lee "Bator" bullet mold, along with a thousand Hornady .22 caliber gas checks & the Lee .224 sizer/gas check installer die.

Gonna cast a few hundred of them today and see what kind of a subsonic load I can come up with that shows reasonable accuracy out of that 24" barrel (it'll do dime size groups at 100 with Midway's (Nosler) "Dogtown" 55 grain hollow points.)

Maybe in a week or three I'll get some range time again and see how they do. Meanwhile, good shooting guys.

Jim -

Jim, wish you luck in the new venture. Like you I have been very busy as of late (well, really for the last several months), and it doesn't appear that things will change for a while...but that's not always a bad thing. I, also, am hoping to get in a little range time in the next couple of weeks (hoping to get out prior to the close of the match, but I'm not holding my breath).
