A little buddy of mine got his first deer yesterday. Him and my father-in-law brought it over to our house to skin and hang over night. He is 10 years old. The kid did excellent for his first time. I just thought I would brag a bit.

Hey, great job! That deceased deer looks to be a great first. And taking time to stop and smell the roses, too.

I always felt rifles chambered in 7.62x39 are among the finest for young hunters. Do you know what kind of ammunition he was using; it certainly appears to have worked.

I believe the round was a Wolf softpoint. There was definately some decent expansion from the look of the exit wound. The deer was shot a bit high and I believe that the shock caused the deer to be paralized.

Are you sure he shot the deer?
The VPC tells me that even the sight of an AK47 will paralize both game and human alike, causing some to even expire due to heart failure out of fear.

I hope my first deer looks that nice, I just had my first night of hunter safety class yesterday.

clipse: You said that the deer was hit a bit high-- how many times was it shot? (Making a bet with self that the answer is "One.")

I've always liked the results of shots that went too high. The shock to the spinal process causes impressive incapacitation similar to brain shots, but with a more stable, larger kill zone target.

Any details on the distance, type of shot (moving or standing), and the deer's immediate reaction to the shot? Was a follow-up needed? How much did it weigh on the hoof, approximately? Terrain? Region?




And tell your young friend that, as a seasoned deer hunter of 33 years and some 20 deer seasons with some good bucks under my belt, I think that's a mighty fine buck he took. As my game bag is empty this season, I can't help but feel jealous!

The terrain was very flat with weeds about 3 feet tall. The buck was on the move but not in a hurry. Just a stride. The buck was about 50 yards out and shot broadside a little high. The buck stopped and dropped right where he stood. It laid there for a couple seconds then kicked, then died. No follow up shot needed.

My first dear was a bit similar. I shot high with my 8mm mauser. The deer dropped right then and there. No follow up needed.

It was shot in Northwest Missouri. As for the weight I would have to said between 200-250lbs. It was a big bodied deer for the antler size.

[Hm. Now that's odd. The young hunter was using a semi-auto rifle that I hear called an "assault rifle," but failed to spray a barrage of lead at the deer. It actually sounds like he fired a controlled careful shot. But, to believe this would be to accept that a responsible hunter is a responsible hunter, regardless of what he carries into the field. But... but... this flies in the face of what I'm being told by Feinstein/VPC/BradyBunch/Etc...]
