Dangers of "Mexican Carry".
Was watching "The New Police Story" (Jackie Chan movie)..
There was one part, a guy is mexican carrying a glock in the front, and Jackie reaches in and pulls the trigger and shoots the guy in the leg... Just a friendly reminder that a few inches to the right, and he'd be childless... So the lesson for today boyz and girlz, don't mexican carry...

I sometimes Mexican carry a 1911 in the back, but it's cocked and locked, so all's well............

Reading thread while carrying w/o a holster...
I lost the holster, kept the gun ...okay I lost 3 holsters and kept the 3 guns...don't ask - requires talent. Never said I was smart now did I ?

First mistake, if you Mexican carry, DO NOT CHOOSE A GLOCK! It has no active safety so the only thing between you and future progeny is that little appendage on the trigger ( either 3 or 5 pounds) and that is not safe enough for me.
When I Mexican carry, it is with a pistol with a manual safety or a revolver with a factory trigger pull, much safer IMO. |

If I'd tried the Mexican carry years ago, the gun would have fallen down my trousers. If I were to try it now, I'd have to buy new trousers to accommodate the gun.

The only gun I'd even remotely consider mexican carrying is a P7, and even then...

Mex carry is fine, no matter the pistol. None of them go off if you keep your finger off the trigger. Remember, its not the gun's fault if some jackass gets careless and pulls the trigger at a bad time.
I often carry a little CZ compact 9mm that way. I tuck it just behind my left hip, cross draw.

Mann.. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but a pistol should ALWAYS live in a holster if on your persons, and a rifle on a sling.
Mex Carry will make you lose body parts.. First thing I tell newbies, don't do what you see on TV...

I got a Taurus 85 CH snub with Barami Hip Grip on it. Great for walking the dog and not having to putz around with a holster. Mounted at 4 o'clock. 95% of the time it is in a holster. Do I Mexican carry doing dog duty?

One rule that has served me well is that a loaded handgun is ALWAYS in a holster. This provides a simple line of demarcation, I don't have to stop and try to remember.
(Didn't Copper's school do the same?) This is not to say that I don't treat EVERY unholstered gun as loaded without confirmation, It is just that I am avoiding the situation where an unholstered gun is sometimes loaded, sometimes not, and I MIGHT make some stupid mistake due to an error in short term memory. Also, carrying Mex presupposes that one will never be running, hitting the ground for cover, and/or any other sudden activity that may jar the gun loose. Bad presupposition. Also, carrying Mex also puts piece next to my sweaty skin, which will ultimately produce a rust problem. |

My current situation in life dictates that many times, I go places where I must leave my pistol in the car all day long. So, I "mexican carry" my pistol to and from the car only... but ONLY use my Taurus PT92 or 99 for this purpose, decocked and manual safety engaged. I would never do this with a pistol with no manual safety... even the decocked P226/.40 I carry when I am able to carry properly with a holster. A Glock? Forget it. I value my balls more than that.

I used the Mexican carry a few times when stationed in the PI, as a holster would have given me away.
A way to do that carry and be a tad more secure is to use a shoestring carry. You tie the ends together and make a loop and put the string over your belt just so and it secures the pistol. I don't have a way to post it in a photo or i would show you.

This reminds me...
Back in the old days of WWIV and Fidonet, and the beginnings of our humble intenet, there was one cat on the gun board who maintained that the best round to carry was the lead roundnose. Why? He'd managed to shoot himself TWICE in the ass while playing fastdraw, and he figured LRN slugs caused less tissue damage.

I'll go ahead and make the statement:
"Glock + Mexican Carrying = Stupidity" I can't imagine what type of stituation it would have to be for me to front mexican carry a glock... simply wrong..

Co-Worker took his CWP class avout 5 years back when they first started in SC. His instructor had them do the Mexican carry if they did not have a holster!
Now that's safety teaching at it's best!

Althogh not recommended, if you have to mexican carry at least do it with an empty chamber.
Which reminds me of Magnum PI for some reason. He always carried in his back and always racked the chamber when he pulled it out. Probably more for dramatic effect, but still the smart way to carry in that mode.

Just to clarify the situation,"Mexican carry" is erronious as Mexicans usually wear (and fabricate)holsters of high quality, secondly the afformentioned mexican carry is at 4 o'clock IWB with no holster, if you're right handed,8 o'clock if lefty(same way)."Felony carry" is in the front which is what you want to avoid if planning children, especially if it's a g-lock.tom.

anygun + "mexican carry" = bad idea
The gun should be in a holster. The ONLY exception I might allow is a Kel-Tec pocket clip. Even then, I'd be MIGHTY weary of an uncovered trigger. Oh, a manual safety is NO replacement for true safety...which starts between your ears. Don't depend on the mechanical safety to keep you safe. I'm sure 1911's have gone off when the owner thought it was locked. Just use a holster...even if you attach it to the front of you pants.

If you decide to "Mexican Carry", against your better judgment, at least use a De Santis Nemesis holster - it has a sticky substance which keeps the holster from moving.
