Hi Folks, I'm Bob.
I have more guns than I need but not as many as I want. I'm partial to bolt rifles, pump shotguns and pistol calibers that start with .4, though I do have a .38 that could have me joining the 642 bunch as well as some ruger MkIIs. (I'm partial but not exclusive, umaggb stands for "universal make ANY gun go bang")

I've done some hunting but not much recently. Putting the bullet where I'm aiming is what does it for me.

I grew up in the peoples republic of N.J. and didn't know it was ok to own guns before I was stationed on the gulf coast of Fla. in 1977. I'm right next door in Alabama now ( a hotbed of common sense and very civil society) and could never consider going back North. What DO they put in the water to make those people in Ma, N.J. N.Y.C. etc. think such crazy political things? I hope I don't offend but from what I've read there are plenty of others who may have wondered the same thing.

Thanks to orionengnr who called me over to the computer to "look at this thread and this one too." enough for me to finally register and become a member.

Long time NRA member and reloader.

Looking forward to all the educational information and stimulating reparte that my lurking has led me to expect.

Well almost but not yet.

I am a firefighter, engaged with a 2 yo girl and a baby boy due in October.

We own numerous long guns and two pistols. Most of the long guns are older shotguns and 22's. My ccw is a 40xd and the fiancee has a Ruger sp101 .38(for now, she is looking for something different as she couldn't hit the broadside of a barn with the .38...but put 10/12 in 3'x2' area with my xd)

I've recently become interested in recreational shooting and would like to buy a good pistol to start off with. The problem is I am really in the dark on whats good and what isn't.

I'm only 17 right now so I can't own a gun yet.

Any suggestions?

Don't be sorry to be new here, you came to the right place.

Given your age, i take it your parents/guardian will buy the gun. Do you have any experience shooting? Are there any guns in the household you live in?
My advice is to walk before you run, begin with a .22 pistol or revolver. It will allow you to practice the basics about grip and stance etc. and the ammo is cheap. Go to a range and look around, ask questions about firearms you see, most shooters are willing to talk and help. Go from there. There are a lot more good pistols than there are bad ones.

I'd recommend the Ruger 22/45. It is a .22 semi that has all of the buttons in the same place as a 1911A1. It also has the same grip angle as the 1911A1.

Therefore, it is an easy switch when you are confident enough to move onto the only pistol that is worth a darn... that's right, the 1911A1!

howdy and welcome to the HR. Like the man said, I would walk before you run.

A good semi-auto .22 is my recco as well. Say maybe a Walther p-22 or a Ruger MK-2 or the like though im sure a ruger 22/45 would serve ya just fine.

Do you have firearms in your home?? do you have someone that can teach you proper saftey and the shooting basics?? If not I suggest taking a formal class to learn those skills as they will lay the foundation of your future.

Welcome to THR and gun community!

Do you have friends who shoot? Most gun enthusiasts love to talk about guns and will be more than happy to help you out. I would recommend that you shoot as many different guns as you can before you buy one. If you have any friends who shoot, come right out and tell them your situation and ask if they will take you shooting.

Some gun ranges, especially indoor ranges, have guns for rent. At the range where I shoot the lane rental is something like $9.50 for all day (I am a member so I don't pay). Gun rental is about $10.00 and that covers all day rental as well, as many guns as you want to try, but only one at a time. The only catch is you have to buy their ammo to run in their guns and that is where they make their profit. If you are going to rent, you will probably have to have parent or guardian there.

Many gun ranges also have air gun ranges and you can start that way. A good air gun is not much different from a .22 and you can own airguns.

In the meantime, read all you can and feel free to ask all the questions you want!

My bad, I didn't see this thread when I first joined. Better late than never I suppose...

I'm a Baylor Univ. student (Junior) who will be taking the fall '07 semester off to go to Ft. Leonard Wood for BCT, having enlisted in the Army Reserves this past April.

I work in a sword and knife shop, having always been interested in blades and all such things but a friend recently got me into guns and directed me here along with some other places, so now I'm hooked on swords, knives and guns.

I've shot a Ruger Mark-2. I really liked it but wasn't sure if that was a good start.

I've been shooting with my friends and I've gotten a run down on safety. I want.

We have no guns what so ever in my house right now and my parents probably don't want me to get one so thats why I need to wait till I'm 18 and can get a license.

I like to have a "bit of everything". I (we) have some small caliber handguns & rifles, medium caliber handguns and some large caliber hand guns...and a 12 gauge shotgun.

. My name is Tre and to be honest with ya'll I’m 14. I have a great knowledge of firearms and very responsible around them. My Grandpa got me into my love of guns when he showed me his Ruger Security Six .357 Magnum

. Which was a couple of years ago. Ever since then I have loved guns...especially REVOLVERS

!!! Although I only own one gun I’m saving for another. My Grandpa said that since I’m at a young age and really can’t own too much of anything he said I'll always be welcome to use his until at an older age. I have a Marlin SS .22 Magnum Rifle. I don’t know why but I do not like leather holsters or Blue finishes on gun's and I prefer magnum calibers over any type...I know I’m weird

. I love anything SS and any holster that is Synthetic or any other kind of weather resistant material. This surely is a great forum and I've enjoyed all the times I have got to talk to you people. This here is a great crowd...never change

Name is Nathan - BigNate on most of my "car" boards - the name was taken here...

Found the board while looking for some information regarding a Mossberg 590 that I just bought. Got great info from this site before joining - thanks! Made signing up a no-brainer.

I am a self described "gun nut" but not as nutty as some - don't have a separate wing of the house dedicated to firearms - but I have "almost enough" - preverbal "one less than enough." Most are stock other than minor bolt-ons - grips, etc - a good trigger or two etc... I am the father of three and you may gauge my level of "gun-nuttyness" by this - am teaching my 9 and 7 year old sons to shoot - but not yet for my 5 year old daughter - she is not "responsible" enough (read - can't be trusted to follow directions)...

I will probably be too liberal for the hard core conservatives here (have no issue with background checks except for my general distrust regarding potential storage of data for later use) - and too conservative for most liberals (believe strongly that law abiding citizens should not only have the right to bear arms but frankly may have a duty to do so in given situations). I live in Arizona so I still enjoy significant liberty regarding the bearing of arms - something that has been a significant factor in choosing to not move to the North East or our neighbor to the west - the PSRC (Peoples Socialist Republic of California) for work.

I hope to learn something here and perhaps even be useful from time to time.

I've been reading and enjoying "The High Road" for quite a while and finally decided to become part of the family recently (first internet forum of any kind I've ever joined). Hello, all. Newbie checking in. Found this place through a blog (books, bikes, and...uhh, something).
Don't have many weapons right now due to a break-in Thanksgiving weekend--they got everything except my & my girlfriend's carry pieces. I've built back up to a Mossberg 500, an SKS/Type 56 (Norinco), and a Mossberg 702, the last acquired Sunday. I'll add more as I can, but I juggle between spending $ on firearms & on bike parts--both are expensive.
Looks like a real nice place y'all have here. Thanks for having me aboard. TB

Just got back into firearms after a long break due to living in Los Angeles and all the lame laws we have here. I just picked up a new XD-45 Service model. I currently own a AMT Hardballer, HK P7M13, 2-1/2" S&W Mod 66, Browning 1922 (Nazi marked), and a 6" Colt Python. Guns I have owned and sold over the years number in the 50's. Some of the ones that make me cry are my Galil ARM, Steyr AUG, MAC 10 and UZI mod A. I have also owned AR-15 variants including HBAR's, CAR's and low production Colt variants. I have owned AK-47 in Egyptian, Romanian and Chinese models. Interesting handguns I have owned include an HK VP70, Detonics Combat Master, and a Gyrojet (never had ammo though).

I am a big fan of both the 9mm and 45 for auto pistols and 357 mag for revolvers. Not a fan of the 40 S&W even though I know it is a fine round. But as long as 45 ACP is available I see no reason for myself to ever own one.

Don't have many weapons right now due to a break-in Thanksgiving weekend--they got everything except my & my girlfriend's carry pieces. I've built back up to a Mossberg 500, an SKS/Type 56 (Norinco), and a Mossberg 702, the last acquired Sunday. I'll add more as I can, but I juggle between spending $ on firearms & on bike parts--both are expensive. Looks like a real nice place y'all have here. Thanks for having me aboard. TB

Hemidart Member Join Date: July 12, 2007 Posts: 5	Wanted to introduce myself. Just got back into firearms after a long break due to living in Los Angeles and all the lame laws we have here. I just picked up a new XD-45 Service model. I currently own a AMT Hardballer, HK P7M13, 2-1/2" S&W Mod 66, Browning 1922 (Nazi marked), and a 6" Colt Python. Guns I have owned and sold over the years number in the 50's. Some of the ones that make me cry are my Galil ARM, Steyr AUG, MAC 10 and UZI mod A. I have also owned AR-15 variants including HBAR's, CAR's and low production Colt variants. I have owned AK-47 in Egyptian, Romanian and Chinese models. Interesting handguns I have owned include an HK VP70, Detonics Combat Master, and a Gyrojet (never had ammo though). I am a big fan of both the 9mm and 45 for auto pistols and 357 mag for revolvers. Not a fan of the 40 S&W even though I know it is a fine round. But as long as 45 ACP is available I see no reason for myself to ever own one.
