1madss..........when putting the two pieces back together make sure the hammer is at 1/2 cock and the lever is open a bit....then they will slide together really nice.

Just an update. We all know the 39 will feed almost anything but im having really good results with The aguila 60gr sss. Cycles fine and i was hitting my 6" steel plate at 100" just fine with my peep sights/off hand It actually seemed to hit a bit harder than the 40gr

I can put 5 rounds within 1" at 100".

Beyond that, I have no guarantee.

C-Fish: That vintage of Marlins is the purdiest to my eye - slender forends, dark walnut...

I've had a couple of those Mounties and a pile of happy memories using them.

Perhaps not as nice as some I have seen here, but not a bad survivor.

This advertisement, from the May 1954 American Rifleman, introduces micro-groove rifling in the Model 39, both rifle and carbine priced at $60.85.

Agreed, nice fence post shots.

Here's mine. Yeah, it's 'empty' because my 39 is still in storage on the west coast 1.5 years after I left it there to migrate to a new state via mass transit in a backpack, and could not carry it with me. Original plan was to ship it here soon after arrival, but da'yum, things didn't turn out at all as planned. I miss it.

I have been longing for a Model 39A rifle for quite some time and now one is available. Does anybody have any advice on what to look for when buying an older L serial number one. I cannot try it out before purchase. I have been told it is an early 50s one? It has a nice bore and the bluing is in decent shape and that it shoots just fine. Is $250 reasonable?

Welcome Speed Six -- The L serial number puts it a 1954 .. I'm sure the experts here -- I'm not -- will be able to assist on the advice part... Good to have you here.

speed six, for 250 it sounds like a deal, you can always ask to make sure the reciever has the last three of the serial number on the other half of the reciever, and if the bolt has the last 3 of the serial number on it. other than that its all opioninated, everyone has a different thought of what 80%, 90%, 70% bluing. thats a good deal, not the cheapest i have seen but its a far cry from the 450+ they seem to be bringing these days. good luck, and we need pictures if you get her.

Actually, I bought my first 1961 Mountie in 1961, new from Kliens in Chicago. Shipped to CT. it was $71.00.
Traded it for a Savage 110 243 in 1970.
Bought this used, but mint, 1961 in 2010.

I have owned a 1951 vintage 39 A for quite sometime and really have enjoyed it.

At a recent gunshow an almost new mod 39 D followed me home. The mgf date by serial number is 1970, this model was only made 1971-1973, with the 1973 being a different version than the first two years.
I feel very lucky have found this and at a reasonable price. Can't wait take it out shooting and see how it compares with my old, Ballard rifled 39 A.

As a side note I also have a Mod. 57 M that is the most accurate lever gun I've ever owned/shot, this is the most overlooked and underated Marlin lever gun made I believe.

It's GREAT to be part of the 39 club!
