The minimum would be a Browning M2.

It depends on which particular kind of bear that you are hunting.

The bigger the bear, the bigger the load.. BOOM!

In my vast experience (I once saw a bear at the zoo), I've found that Most bears prefer to carry a S&W snubbie, such as the 442. It conceals well in their fur. Load? 158gr LSWHP, of course.

Bears would probably prefer a shotgun to make squirrel hunting easier. they could also snack on small birds. As far as loads, they might try buckshot for salmon fishing. Of course slugs would probably make moose hunting a much more pleasant experience. For self defense against hunters, the sound produced by the pump action, combined with a loud growl should scare the them away.

Hkmp5sd,
I think you might be a little light. I prefer at least a 20 mm for bears. Now if only they would come up with a 1911 single stack in 20 mm I might feel comfortable in bear country

Actually, It doesn't really matter.

Make sure you go hiking with a partner. Should a bear attack become inherent, shoot your hiking buddy in the foot and run like hell. The bear will go for the fresh blood.

Hope this helps, and no, I will NOT go hiking with you!

Something with a trick corrosion-resistant finish; possibly teflon-coated, to make wiping honey off easier.

Vote for Mouse guns !

From personal observations of 3 bear in SW Colorado last summer, I am convinced that they must have been carrying mouse guns. Each one of them was hauling --- in the opposite direction.

Bears are not allowed have guns. The constitution reads "Keep and bear arms", not "Arm & keep bears"

Ah, yes, bears!

Some of my favorite TFL threads involved bears so how COULD I have forgotten?

To the next bear thread posted by a THRer seriously wondering about encountering one!

Yogi carries a 454 Casull in a shoulder hoster when he wears a vest, or when going natural carries it in a picanic basket.

I would think a bear would be happier w/ a picnic basket rather than a firearm.

Like Nosferatu said...

Make sure you take a partner with you.

And a set of good running shoes for yourself. You don't need to be faster than the bear...

you think a bear is going to have an easy time with a wimpy handgun? with no opposable thumbs??? come on, hes gotta have a lever action rifle.

for bear DEFENSE, i'm going to opt for a 12 gauge with a cz52 as sidearm.

anyone remember the story this past summer about the guys fishing on the russian river up here in alaska, and the one guy threw his shotgun at the bear cause he wasnt sure if a round was chambered? and his buddys killed the bear after their friend dove in the river?

turns out that one of the guys had a 9mm, and the other had a sks. the papers said nothing (that i recall) about the SKS.
