I've been trying to talk myself out of buying this gun for over a year, but once they removed the lock.... At any rate, hopefully I'll get some time to shoot it this weekend.

Worth a try. Maybe you will get a Customer Service person in good mood and power to supply the grips under the circumstance.

Hopefully you will have it back soon and can put this unpleasant event behind!!

Unfortunately, S&W isn't very descriptive (forthcoming) with explanations on failures/repairs.

I have only sent one revolver back to them. The only time I heard from them was when they sent the travel vouchers. Otherwise your 340 (likely a new one) will just show up. I don't know if their policy has changed. It was four years ago when my 642 had to go back for repair.

I don't think they will call you, hence if you want to talk to them I would call.

DAdams thanks for the compliments. I wasn't really looking for an M&P with the 405s on there, but it was the only no lock gun I could find, so. I figure if I get tired of them, I can always sell them since they have the S&W logo. In my opinion, it's a steep price for a revolver. I tried to pacify the want for one with a LCR XS/bootgrip combo, but the LCR is just an ugly looking gun. I know it shouldn't matter for a CC piece, but hey I guess I'm a little too shallow. I'll see how the two compare against one another with .38 Special, since they are nearly the same weight. As for the CD ammo, I figured it probably be low flash and recoil and still be better than any .38 offering, but we'll see. I tried to find some 125 grain Federal and Gold Dot but couldn't. Any ammo recommendations in 357 would be appreciated.

It is a pricey piece the 340 I'll agree, especially now. They were somewhat less at their intro. I still don't feel there is anything on the market that compares .... without doing some sight work at least.

Right you are, you shouldn't have any trouble selling the 405s, I would hold on to them even if you need to try others, I think you will gravitate back to the laser and the rubberized air pocket.

I'm sure as most of us have, you will want to try the .357 just to get it out of the system and see that the revolver will stand up to the use as advertised. It is particularly interesting with the Hogue Mongrips. A tolerable hand cannon in that configuration.

Hornady does the CD in .357 125 grain. I bought some but haven't tried it.
I ran some Remington .357 through mine and the SGDFSB 135 gr. I keep both around as I can always run it in my 686.

These days plus P is all I'am interested in carrying with and my 340 is currently filled with the SGDFSB PN 23921. At some point you have to pick a round, stick with and become proficent with it, knowing its characteristics in your 340.

Point shooting and follow-up shots are the key. The Old Fuff drill 5x5x5.
Five rounds, five seconds, five yards. If you can put five in the COM consistantly that's the goal.

I'm finally ready to phase out my 442 as my CCW gun. My M&P 340's now been treated to an action job by Nelson Ford in Phoenix, I've put a Hogue Bantam grip on it, and my El Paso Saddlery C-Force was delivered yesterday.

Well I finally got around to shooting the 340 today. 38 special and 38+p wasn't bad, but 15 rounds of Hornady CD .357 wasn't too much fun. The picture was taken after the first five rounds of 357.

Thanks for the report. 38 spl plus P is definitely more tolerable. Do you have the standard grips on yet? .357 is stout, very stout. How is your hand otherwise? Bruises, concussive aches? Did that come from the grip or the high part of the frame?

I'm sure you have heard the term shot little carried often?

That's another reason why I passed on the 340PD, and even lighter Centennial.

How did it do otherwise?

Going to stick with it?

No, DAdams I haven't ordered the hougue bantams as of yet. As far as keeping the gun, I plan to. But if I can't become proficient with full power 357 loads, then there is a good chance I'll sell it. The 357 is very stout in such a light weight gun. I'd heard everyone else say that it was, but I guess I just wanted to find out first hand. The actual frame is what cut my hand. I was trying to grip the gun high to minimize nose flip, perhaps just a little too high. But other than the cut my hand is fine, no pain or soreness. I plan on getting some BB 125gr Heavy, Federal 125 gr, and some new PDX1 357 magnum and trying again in a few weeks.

That's why I like the Crimson Trace 405 grips so well. Extra thickness of rubber and an airpocket right where it counts. Of course the laser too.

But wait, low and behold after review I see you do have the CT grips. Man, you do need to get that grip down a bit. The web of your thumb and forefinger should just be at the top of the grip.

I got my 340 back yesterday from the malfunction, they replaced the frame and that's it. I am kinda disappointed because there are some scuffs and scratches/gouges from when it malfunctioned that they did nothing about. I called them today and they said to send it back to them again and they will look at it.

Here are a couple of pictures of what I'm talking about, the finish on the cylinder get screwed up when the metal piece inside the top of the frame came out and wedged itself between the frame and cylinder. Underheath the barrel where the extractor fits into was also damaged during the malfunction. Maybe I'm just being too picky, but the way I see it is, they should fix everything on it that was due to the malfunction. Sure, it works like it should, but the value wouldn't be the same because of those defects.

I would tell them I want it in the condition it was in one round prior to failure... Like new. Since it will be hard for them perhaps to make it like that, then tell them you will settle for a new 340.

Actually I could live with a new cylinder....shhhh.

Wait until you drop it a couple times.... on cement....

Like you, I'd expect a new gun or at least everything to be replaced considering that's what you had before the kaboom. These guns are far from cheap, so for s&w to skimp on repairs isn't justifiable. It might be too late at this point, but as someone else mentioned maybe look into them replacing the frame with a no lock version. I could be wrong, but I'd think you'd have some leverage since after all it could of turned out a lot worse.

Well, finally did today what I should have done in the first place....bought a new M&P340. Traded my 642 for this little gem. After I retired from law enforcement 3 years ago, bought a used 442, then traded it for a LCR, which got traded for a 642 w/ 2.5 inch barrel, and now the 340. Wished that gun was around when I started LE. Take her out for a test spin tommorrow if it ever stops raining!...

FLGator. You may want to look into an ankle holster or a cross draw connected with velcro.
