H Cap mags for Mini-14, how hard is it to find good ones?

A thread in the rifles forum has me wondering about htis. My little brother is looking for a rifle and thinking Mini-14. I figured since they've been out forever, being pretty popular there'd be no problem getting mags for it. Now my Dad's mini-30 is terrible about finding good mags. Anybody have any luck finding good ones or just no luck what so ever?

It's a PITA to find _good_ Mini-14 mags holding over 10 rounds. About the only good ones I'm seeing online these days are 30 and 40 rounds PMIs. Bring money.

If you don't mind being limited to 10 rounders, the Pro Mags have a good rep over in the Mini-14 forum at the Perfectunion BBS.

PMIs are best mag for the mini-14.

If you look around the net you can find them. Do not buy the cheap mag at the gun show, thay don't feed right.

MiniZ (Thr member) had some PMI mag for sale a few month ago.
I bought 2 PMI 30 round mags from him

Agree, PMIs are the way to go. A few years ago, Ammoman had PMI 30 rd blue pre-bans for $10 each (shipped). My buddy and I snapped up five mags each. They've worked perfectly without any issues.

Nowadays, they are harder to find. I let my subscription to Shotgun News drop but IIRC there was at least one outfit that offered PMI 30 rounders for around $30-40 per mag.

John Masen mags work well too. I have had good luck with fed ord mags, at least the fed ord's that you could get a few years ago. I have found the minis aren't too fussy about mags, fortunately. If you get a bad mag, try putting a ruger follower in it, several people I've read about have done this and solved the problems, even with the dreaded usa magazines. I have also found the plastic mags that fit either mini 14 or ar 15 to do okay, though a bit fragile.

My suggestion is to avoid anything that isn't Ruger, PMI, or the new ProMag 10round mags. I've tried to use the John Masen mags and they are junk. I sent them back to John Masen and they sent me some new junk mags.

Exclamation CDNN has PMIs!!!

CDNN now has PMIs along with all the other Mini-14 mags. If you're looking for PMIs, grap 'em before they are gone. I'm waiting for the 5 20-rounders I ordered to arrive.

Frodo, did you get your PMI mags yet? Were they new in the wrapper? Did they say PMI on the baseplate?

FWIW, my PMI (NIW but not purchased from CDNN) did not say PMI on the baseplate.

Yea, I know some don't. Sometimes it helps the resale value though if they do...

Can't they be altered to take AR-15 mags?

I already answered Wondernine's PM (didn't see his post here), but for everyone else:

I got my PMI 20 rounders from CDNN. They were NIW and are marked PMI on the baseplate. Note that I also have 4 30 round PMIs (1 came w/my Mini and I ordered 3 NIW from Delta Force), none of which have any markings at all.

All my PMI mags work just fine.

I would not be surprised to see a few more stashes of PMI Mini-14 mags show up in the next year as the expiration (I HOPE) date of the AWB nears and hoarders try to dump their stashes.

MagKnightX: I doubt it would be feasible to alter a Mini-14 to accept AR-15 mags. IF it was I'm sure somebody would be offering this service by now.

Farranger: The old Fed Ord mags were made by PMI, that's why they look the same. :-)
