The sand has two functions : as a heat distributor, it helps get an even color, as a heat delayer, it helps get a finer oxidised "grain", slightly more scratch-resistant than if you do it without the sand. Nevertheless, it'll never be as resistant as the hot caustic blueing, but it's infinitely nicer.
Another method : grind charcoal in the size of small pebbles, put them in your cast-iron pot, jar, whatever you use, and bury your parts in. Heat in the same way. Put a cover on the pot, you don't want the charcoal to burn but just to cinder. When it starts to do so, you're at the right temperature, keep it like that for half an hour and remove the part. When it's well-done, you'll get the real "Colt" blue, a very dark and deep black-blue, looking like enamel. Splendid, but very difficult to achieve. Have fun !

wo wo wo hold on a minute. JCT you bought a nickel plating kit off of ebay. You need to explain more and tell us about the processing. That is very intersting. You need to post some pics.

Also check Brownells at www.brownells.com for several different methods and equipment to nickel and chrome plate. Then remember that like with blueing, it's the polish that makes the finish.

Something I noticed about my new Walker ..it is a ASM made gun ..the only markings on the barrel are ..Navy Arms Inc. thats it ..no Black Powder Only ..or anything .
I was going to defarb the writing on the barrel ...But their is so little , I`ll just leave it .Anyone else have an ASM Walker ?
There is a boxed AD on the frame which makes it a 1978 ..wow older than I would have though ...looked to be never fired .

Some time one gets lucky and falls into a bed of roses, well it's happened twice. Two months back I wandered into a local shop and saw a used Uberti 1860 Army for sale at $165 so it went home with me. My WALKER purchase was almost the same but cost me $4 more. Both guns have some "handling marks" but that just saves me the trouble and frustration of doing it myself. The local Cabela's has them out for better than twice what I paid for mine, makes me really feel good.

Thanks Scrat, I appreciate that. I like my Colts, all my blackpowder revolvers are Colts except for two. A Euroarms 1860 that is not in this photo and a Patterson copy brought in by Marrietta Arms ages ago. I shoot the Euroarms, but not the others.

The photo below is my collection of Colt black powder revolvers, most are Second generation guns. The cased pair are a couple third generation signature series guns, 1860 army models, one is the fluted cylinder version. The only one in this group that is not a Colt is the Patterson copy I mentioned above. The musket is an original 1862 dated special contract Colt musket. In this mix you will find the Walker, two Third Model Dragoons, A pair of 1851 Colt Navy revolvers as well as a pair of 1861 Colt Navy revolvers. There is also a 1862 pocket navy and 1862 Sheriff's model. I have not picked up any of the little .31 caliber guns, but I suspect I will at some point.

I'm drooling with envy. Love your Colt contract musket. Always wanted one of those myself.

I love the 2nd gens too but only have one. 1860 Army, fluted. I shoot her too. Although with an Uberti rebated cylinder, keeping the full flute pristine.

Thanks Phantom Captain, I see we are practically neighbors. lol I am glad you enjoyed the picture. Part of the fun of collecting is talking about them. If you ever catch me at a Ohio Gun Collector Association show you will find I am hoarse at the end of the day. lol

Actually the bulk of my guns are modern, but I do have a fair share of black powder stuff. I also have a Brown Bess, Charleville musket and a .58 cal Enfield musket...all are repros that I do shoot. Along with several different flint and percussion single shot pistols.

You two must live within sight of each other, because that contract musket Phantom Captain is "drooling" over didn't make it into the pic you posted.

You may need to scroll down, or if you are on dial up, it may not have made it as the picture comes up. I am in the boonies and stuck with dialup, no clear view of the southern sky either... But the musket is there across the bottom.

Nice gun, it came from a museum that went under. She is a shoter artillery model that was sadly nickle plated as a parade gun for Civil War veterans groups. The markings are nice and clear and the bore is perfect. You don't see them very often...

"ASM Black Powder Only Cal 44 Made in Italy" no other markings. The s/n is D 81292 any idea when it was mfg.? thanks

Just wanted everyone to know that my rig is on its way from bigbadgun! He whipped me up a little studded belt and holster for my Walker.

A true member of the THR Walker club should have additional items made by other members of the club don't you think?? I mean how cool is that?

need more info under the barrel next to the trigger guard are the proof markings. You need to look for two letters in a square that is the year it is made. there will be other markings nike an N should be around 3 or 4
