Alright, folks, don't be shy...let's talk shootin'!


I'll start the ball rolling (in a Steve Smith kinda way). How many of you folks plan to shoot a Highpower or CMP match this year as a newbie?

If you are talking about 2003, I am.

Right now I am accumulating the necessary stuff. Shooting jacket, better spotting scope etc. Then my CMP Garand are going for a visit. My gun club hosts monthly John C. Garand matches and first I will go to watch then I may try. Any suggestions?

After the reports came back from the last 3-gun match, I'm really interested in that, but we're looking at the same problem...

Palm Bay is about 3 hours south of Jax. I make the drive fairly frequently. My son is stationed there (NAS Jax.)

PMR&PC has installed camper sites for use during matches. (Since I'm about 1.5 miles away I don't know much about them except that they are there and have 50 amp service.)

Yup. Not as a newbie, per se, but as a manifestly inept rifleman...

Hopefully I'll be able to sneak down to Atterbury and shoot the full 600-yd. course.

I haven't had a chance to get into CMP yet. This year I'm planning on plenty of 3 gun and IDPA. One of these days I'll try hipower, I just need another 3 or 4 hours in the day.

Derek, hope you're still around. I can discuss that with you. Do you have an M1 Garand, M1A, or AR15 WITHOUT a muzzle brake? A bolt gun that you can reload rapidly (stripper clips) will also work.


BTW, there is a LOT of HP in North Florida.

I _had_ both of the former, now I've got the latter (Armalite M15 upper -- probably counts as a muzzle break).

Avoid anything with a brake. The matches like you'll attend aren't really strict on the rules, but that is one that we are all serious about.

Actually, I'm hoping to start both in 2003. I began IDPA matches this past summer and fall and can hardly wait to begin rifle matches.

Guess I'll have to start hanging out more in this forum to begin learning about high power and CMP matches. Is there a site(s?) that have the basic low-down on required equipment / courses-of-fire and all that?


FWIW: I'm already planning on purchasing a decent spotting scope and shooting mat (maybe a "drag-bag"/matt combo).

Gainesville Target Range in Alachua County Florida ( grti.ws is the url), hosts monthly high power CMP competitions. The next match is scheduled for Sat Jan4 at 9AM.

If all goes well, I should have my M1A loaded version by April. I figure 4 or 5 months after that to accesorize, work up load data, and practice. After that, I'll probably look to get into a couple local matches just for the fun of it. If I actually start doing well, I may considering shelling out more cash and getting into serious competition, but I'd prefer to keep things friendly and within the budget.

You only need one accessory for that rifle in Highpower, and that's a good sling. Get on the line Marine!

Been shooting IDPA all winter so far. Several places shoot indoor matches that are within a one or two hour drive from my home. The closest is about a 45 minute drive and I go there five times a month to compete in local matches.
Like they say-It's all good!

I'm planning to shoot some Highpower as well as long Range Rifle at West End Gun Club (San Bernardino, CA) this coming year. I've been concentrating on pistol the last few months, with only a once-a-month 3-Gun match for rifle (and I'm using the M1A for that, which means I'm in it for the experience and practice mostly! )

As to muzzle brakes: uh, here in the Peoples' Democratic Republic of Kalifornistan M1A's are legal ONLY with the "CA muzzle brake"; the Evil Flash Hider is Taboo according to the shamans and inquisitors of our State Religion (i.e.: the socialists in Sacramento.) How does that affect us for CMP or 'legit' Highpower competitions?

Thanks for the advice Steve. I never fired below a 235 in the Marines for the 5 years I was in, so I know the value of a tight loop sling. Any recommendations on which one to get for the M1A?

Ever have one of those times when you buy what is considered "the best" and a short time afterward something else comes out that blows it away? Welcome to my life. I have two Les Tam custom leather slings...easily the BEST leather 1907 style slings on the market...each handmade after a call to Les the maker for personal build info. Beautiful leather, strong keepers, you name it. It shames the Turner leather slings. Now Turner has come out with their "Biothane" sling that is CMP and NRA Service Rifle approved. Wow. It looks like a black leather 1907 sling, but it has a tacky rubber like texture. Solid. No numbers on the holes, but a fine tipped soldering iron could fix that easily. If you feel like you might get into competition, and you want an awesome sling, get that biothane. Its something else. I think Sinclair is selling it.

Doing my first 300 meter match tomorrow morning with my Garand. It's supposed to be -4 tonight and I had a terrible time practicing and sighting in with 30+ mph winds last week. I'm still quite the newbie to highpower, but I sure like shooting for a score. I've just got to work on learning the ropes and getting those scores higher.

it sounds cold to me but if you are going to go shoot in that weather you have the dedication to keep going and to improve a long way.

when it warms up you will see alot more folks and you will have alot of fun but you take each match like practice for the next match.

what is the distance that you will shoot in this match, 100yard , 200 yards?

if you ever need any info on any aspect of highpower please ask and that goes from positions to courses of fire to equipment and anything else that involves any type of service rifle highpower matches please just ask as you do have some folks here that will help in any way they can.

and about the scores I remember my first match years ago and out of about 30 folks I think I finished second from last but I loved it and it made me want to do it again and again.
I also shot a garand at the begining and love that weapon.

if its windy do not worry because it will be windy for everybody and there are a few tricks to shooting in the wind and on the positions in the wind, but I do know what you mean as I finnally after about 2 months of trying to get some shooting not in the wind I finnally got to do it last week as I was trying a my backup rifle with new loads and found out its shoots great instead of getting blown all over the target.

let us know how you did and if you have any questions after the match please ask.
I know steve smith will give you some great advice as he is very good at service rifle highpower .
and I also will give you any info on the sport that you would like also and no question is to strange and there are some very small basics in every position thats will help your scores rise quickly.
