The Model 640 .38 Special Centennial Stainless was manufactured between 1989 & 1996. The nominal barrel length was 1.86 inches on the standard variant.
Serial numbers in the BRFxxxx range shipped in August 1994, in the CAMxxxx range in January 1996, so 1995 seems likely.

The Model 66 no dash with round butt and 2.5 inch barrel was manufactured between 1974 & 1977. The number you have given is an assembly number, used to track parts in the factory. The serial number will have a K in the number and is located on the bottom of the grip frame. You will need to remove the grips to see it. Sometimes the serial number is also duplicated under the crane, but not always. If you post the serial number I'll give you the year.

lenght of the barrel is 4 "
the grips are square and of the type "wooden target " with the medallion s&w
its a six shooter
the sights are fixed front red ramp , adjustable at the rear
the serial nr is bnp6113
the model is 686-3

The Model 18 K22 Combat Masterpiece was produced from 1949 to 1985, then reintroduced in S&Ws Classic line in the last two years. The Model 18 is the .22lr understudy to the 4 inch barreled .38 Special Model 15 Combat Masterpiece, in the same way that the 6 inch barreled .22 lr Model 17 K22 Masterpiece was the twin to the six inch barreled .38 Special Model 14 K38 Masterpiece. It was and is manufactured on S&Ws K frame with a tapered barrel, adjustable rear sight and ramp front sight. In very good condition they will bring up to $550. I have one and it is my most used handgun.
Your gun dates to 1958.

Your Model 686-3 Distinguished Combat Magnum was manufactured in 1993. The target stocks are sometimes refered to as Goncalo Alves after the timber tey are made from.

Your Model 17 K22 Masterpiece was manufactured in 1960. Serial range for that year was K386805 to K429894.

.357Shooter: The N9xxxxxx range ran from 1982 to 1986, ending around N97xxxx, the 629-1 was produced from 1982 to 1988, so 1982 to 1986 is the know date range. Assuming roughly 15,000 N prefix guns per year over that period I guesstimate that your friend's gun is probably from 1983.
