Is the .44 Mag still the most powerful handgun as Dirty Harry claimed a while back or has another taken it's place?

If you're going to include the BFR (which shoots a rifle cartridge), then you may as well include Savage Strikers and T/C Contenders and whatnot; in that case, the most powerful handgun cartridge is .300 Win Mag or something like that.

As far as actual factory-loaded handgun cartridges go, I think the .500 Linebaugh is the current king of the hill for wheelguns and .50AE rules the auto roost.

Don't forget the new .50 Smith & Wesson, that's allegedly due for formal announcement/launch at the SHOT Show in February 2003. This will allegedly involve a new frame (the "X" frame) and be a real monster, certainly up there in the .475/.500 Linebaugh power class. Personally, I can't see why I'd want one - a .44 Magnum Redhawk with Garrett Hammerheads gives me all the power I think I'll ever need in a handgun, and is right out there at the ragged edge of what I can control!

No, he specified revolver or auto. So we can't even bring up the .45/70 derringer by American Derringer. Besides, I am sure JD Jones has plenty of stuff that will out do a .300 Win Mag. I guess I should go to the link before asking this question, but what does a .600 Nitro revolver weigh ? The cylinder must be six inches in diameter ? By the way, I am all for the idea that if a handgun is chambered for a given cartridge, it is in fact a handgun cartridge.

I remember a revolver that shot 50 bmg, it was on tfl at first it looked like it was photoshoped but I guess its real(painful to fire).

Friend of mine had a 50 BMG single shot.
Looked like a TC on steroids.
Recoil not much but the muzzle brake would cook all but the shooter.
Accurate, absolutely beautiful metal and wood.

Its a rough call if you wanna bring up factory loaded ammo...you can get hot 4570 loads that will do lots to your elbows in the way of pain....or hot 425 grain reloads also. The BFR is a fun gun and an amazingly nice shooter. IMO, stock 4570 loads are no worse to shoot than a hot Casull round from a Cowboy style gun...no Raging Bulls inc. in this analogy.....

The auto goes to the DE 50...up to 2000 FPE and keeps on ticking....love it. (Except when your nicely asked to not shoot it anymore at your freindly local indoor range...the muzzle blast sends every target in the place flailing, the noise rivals a very close .50 muzzle loader and the shock wave feels like your "IN" a bass drum...miked, amplified and speakers pointing back at you!)

Linebaugh's 475 is possibly hotter than the 500, because the cylinder walls are thicker and you can run more pressure.

There is also a special pair of Linebaugh wildcat calibers in 475 and 500 - the "long" series based on Ruger 357Maximum frames. These are just flat-out psycho. And you have a butcher a fairly rare, out-of-production Ruger to get one

The 480 Ruger is "just" a downgraded 475Linebaugh.
